Name: Calignus
Age: Roughly 3,200 years old (Modern)
Gender: Male
Race: Shadow Dragon
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Power Level: Mid-tier High (8) (Dragon Form) Low-tier High (7) (Human Form)
Timeline: Flexible
Appearance:
Dragon Form:
A monstrously colossal reptile with all-too-intelligent eyes, his body swirled about by ice-cold shadows while great, batlike wings spread wide from his back and rows of razor-sharp teeth compete with talons the size of greatswords for the creature's deadliest physical quality. An aura of terror pervades the very atmosphere around the shadow dragon.
Human Form:
A vaguely oriental man with his ink-black hair tied back in a chinese braid, wearing midnight-black armor with chains criss-crossing over his chest. A black neck-guard raises on all sides, but he wears no helmet. The armor on his arms is skin-tight and in banded strips, with each ring of metal sporting a bone-white spike. In place of pauldrons, the picked-clean skulls of identical but unknown beasts rest upon his shoulders, razor-sharp blades jutting up out of their eye sockets. In place of a belt buckle, a wyrmling horned dragon skull sits upon his waist just above a black fur loincloth. The boots on his armor are designed to end in reptilian talons instead of coming to a rounded point and a midnight-black katana rests upon his hip in a matching sheath.
Personality: As cold as ice and as vicious as the plague, Calignus has nonetheless seen wilder days. Time has taught him immense self-control and wisdom and his every act is tempered with consideration. When he acts, he is more likely to use a display of skill as opposed to brute force, as he considers the latter unrefined and a sign of a lack of intelligence. He takes most conflicts anymore with a passive aggression that tends to ward off any who might otherwise be tempted to bring them in his direction, but prefers to leave most fighting to his Shadow Dragon Ranger, whom he sees as a sort of protege.
History: The first recorded appearance of the Shadow Dragon known as Calignus was two thousand years ago during the Great Demon Wars, on the side of the royal house. He was already an elder wyrm then, and his great power wrecked havoc on the rebels until a young dragon joined them to even the score.
This dragon, named Nip, was gifted enough to match the might of the great wyrm and they fought to a vicious stalemate while the war raged beneath them. With Calignus effectively kept too occupied to participate in the war, the other dragons of the rebel forces were able to overrun the defenses of the royal house, even as the sky filled with stormy shadows and blazing flashes of light from the battle above. Each time one dragon would try to leave to aid his side, the other would strike him in the back, drawing him back into the conflict.
When the clashing in the skies, long since hidden from sight, faded not long before the fall of the royal house, it was thought that the two dragons had destroyed each other in battle. It would be two millennia, when dragons and demons once again waged war, this time in the world of humans, that this assumption would be proven false, and the events of the past would once again begin to turn ...
Powers: As ancient as he is, Calignus' powers are great and many, specializing in the manipulation of shadows. His magic can command them to attack or hide him, and he can step through from one space of shadow to another, and even disappear into them entirely. As a dragon, he also possesses a Shadow Breath attack that, instead of dealing damage, saps the strength from the victim, reducing them to weak, fragile things, if not killing them outright from the strain on their bodies just living had suddenly become.
While he possesses immensely more physical power and toughness in his dragon form, he is still far more powerful than a normal human being even in his human form, and is faster, stronger, tougher and in possession of far finer senses than any normal human could hope to possess. He has also honed his command of human weapons to mastery over the centuries, with the exception of the gun, which he deems useless to him. His favored weapon has become the katana for its agility balanced with its killing power.
Equipment: Only his midnight-black katana, made from materials unknown. He might know, but he tells the story of how he acquired it differently to each person based on what would disturb them the most, usually claiming it was smithed from the bones of a rival elder wyrm whom had tried to end him. No matter the origin, it is a virtually unbreakable weapon with an extremely keen, impossibly sharp edge, and its eons in the shadow dragon's presence has corrupted the very essence of the weapon, so that even outside of his presence, it gives a cold, dark aura and burns those who try to touch it as if by black frostbite, immediately turning the grasping hand a rotted, frostbitten black.
Weakness: Calignus is most vulnerable to light energies, and much of his magic, including his ability to go intangible as a dragon, is removed in broad, bright, unfiltered daylight.
