Name: Jack Graves
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Alignment: Neutral Good
Power Level: Middle-Tier Medium (5)
Timeline: Modern. Applicable to almost any timeline with humans running around. (An exception would be extreme cases of Sci-Fi and pre-civilization.)
Appearance: Jack is fairly average in stature (6’0”) and is well-built in terms of his upper body due to his work as a grave keeper (among other odd jobs). His hair is short, spiky and resembles an unkempt, two-colored bird’s nest (front is white, back is black); in addition he has blue-gray eyes which compliments his odd natural hair-color well. He is no stranger to physical labor so on occasion he is quite dust covered. The clothing he wears is well-worn: a shirt, vest, heavy-duty jeans and a handkerchief around his neck because it doubles as a dust mask in addition to “looking cool” (in his opinion). He has no concept of expressive boundary and is fairly exaggerated with his emotions, so he usually has a stupid grin plastered on his face.
Personality: Jack is an energetic individual who takes a great interest in the unnatural/unsolved mysteries of the world (supernatural, occult and otherwise). He also believes that solving the “mystery” is the best motivation. He is a sponge when it comes to mythology but utterly fails in many other academic departments, it is believed that he actually repels this knowledge from sinking into his mind (math and basic English are the exceptions). Despite his cheerful attitude, interacting with other people is often awkward. He also has problems understanding the finer points of taking social cues from others (subtlety is wasted on him).
He has a habit of talking to himself out loud and gestures animatedly when he has to explain something. Jack has a tendency to ramble if he gets into a particularly juicy tidbit of mythology/legend or suspicion. An important thing to note is that although he is characterized by his zeal, he is not ADHD jittery, and can act normal should the situation call for it, however there are times when he DOES get carried away by his own optimism.
History: Jack Graves is the hermitic son of the late Reverend, Cid Graves of Southern Hill Church. Despite his father’s previous and highly community-oriented involvement with the members of Southern Hill, Jack would prefer to shy away from them because of his eccentric (and locally frowned upon) interests in the otherworldly.
To cope with the odd looks and comparisons to his father after his passing, he (ironically) ended up taking on the job of being the caretaker of the city’s graveyard. With a way to support himself, he was able to indulge in researching the occult and the discarded beliefs of the past and feed a frivolous dream of becoming a sort of exorcist-adventurer extraordinaire. In a way he did end up on the path to becoming that with the ‘Suit of Bones’ incident.
After the events of the ‘Suit of Bones’ Jack became inducted to the world of supernatural operations and was actively traveling to remedy the events of the disruptive paranormal (however the existence of this organization is questionable, but he is still supplied with calls to particular assignments). In a notable incident he wound up becoming blessed by a witchdoctor for exorcising a ghoul from her spice basement (he did it with his Lucky Spade, his shovel). As a result of this he is technically haunted by a beneficial spirit, however the extent of his knowing this is extremely limited and in many ways, one-sided. (See Powers/Abilities for more information.)
Powers/Abilities: Jack was blessed by a witchdoctor to forever be bound with a protective departed spirit (a guardian non-angel almost…). The name of this particular “ghost” is the Skull King from the ‘Suit of Bones’ incident. Despite being told this, Jack doesn’t fully comprehend nor is able to understand the full extent of this “blessing” and what it entails. Despite the Skull King being able to perceive the living world as Jack does, Jack cannot perceive him (much to the Skull King’s irritation).
The Skull King’s original powers were the ability to directly control bone and bonelike material (cartilage, etc.) such as manipulate entire bodies like a marionette, combust/collapse/snap/crush bone, etc. however due to his binding to Jack and lack of his own body, this power is severely weakened in terms of distance and effectiveness but still existent. Using this ability tires out the Skull King’s awareness but has no negative effect on Jack. (Max Range 20ft. and Greatest Efficiency Range 6ft. These distances are radial and in consideration from his head and eye-level.)
Instinct – Jack has a 6th sense about detecting things in a scene or area. In actuality it is a tingling sensation the Skull King sends him whenever he sees/spots something (this sensation is usually just a light tugging on his bones, usually on whatever is closest to the ‘clue’ and in that direction).
Luck – Jack possesses great physical fortitude and resilience. Once again it is from the assistance of the Skull King and his direct manipulation/reinforcement in Jack’s bone structure. (ie: preventing his bones from being crushed by an outside force, it still causes pain but the bones will not break/splinter.)
Immunity – Jack is resistant to minor/lesser demon possession due to the fact that that spot is ALREADY TAKEN by the Skull King. Should Jack be unconscious or otherwise unable to act according to his own will, the Skull King will puppet him accordingly so that he doesn’t end up killing himself.
Fighting – Jack has an unconventional fighting style in that he utilizes brute strength and his trusty shovel to incapacitate/kill foes (these foes are usually not human).
Equipment: Jack wears a silver memento from his late father which is a purified/holy trinket (called Sign, for name purposes). It wards off most minor curses and can exorcise demons and otherworld entities if combined with the right other ingredients (by itself it can’t exorcise anything). The object itself is a necklace with a metal tag that resembles the alchemical symbol of neptunus, enclosed by a circle.
Jack’s signature shovel which he calls Lucky Spade is almost never from his side. He uses it much like a weapon and as a bludgeon. He insists on keeping it because of how many different uses he can seem to create for a shovel. (“It’s a hammer, no, a crowbar! WAIT A FLYSWATTER- OH WAIT A-!! *goes on*”)
*For detail purposes, he'll bring it with him in a sport's equipment bag so as not to stick out AS much. He leaves his shovel at the door in his home and when visiting others' houses because he isn't devoid of basic manners (unless a job/investigation rules otherwise).
"Tools for Work"
This is a mild variable of equipment, since he is an Exorcist and often takes on various jobs which require vastly different tools/materials he actually has a HUGE stock-pile of things to work with but cannot lug them around with him everywhere. He has access to nearly every accessible human tool (that doesn't require major inherent magic in a human) to most otherworldly-based problems. The trade-off in this is that if he didn't bring the tool/material with him, he obviously cannot use it. Since his work is usually away from his horde of tools, this isn't an overpowering trait. Basically, for jobs he is well informed on, he will be proportionately prepared for it (for the most part). However most jobs aren't dryly cut in what is needed, so he is often forced to bring the most generic tools to compensate.
Weakness: Gullibility, he believes almost any ‘new’ myth from a higher authority and lacks the ability to immediately discern faulty information. Coupled with his innate talent of being unable to comprehend anything outside of his area of expertise (myths, conspiracy theories, taking care of a graveyard and basic English and math) he is not very apt at tackling the “real world”.
Self-Defeating Equipment – this mainly applies to Sign and its ability to act as a ward. Due to his wearing it all the time, the Skull King’s powers are almost entirely sealed by it! So much so that the Skull King’s powers are only active on Jack’s body and cannot affect anyone else as long as he is wearing it!
Can die and be injured just like any other human being. Needs to sleep six to eight hours a day, have water on a regular basis and needs two meals a day.
Notes: My second character! This time it’s a dude (with a horrible pun last name to boot)! Hope it’s alright and that it matches…I wasn’t too sure about the power level…but hopefully it all makes sense. To those of you curious about what the ‘Suit of Bones’ incident is, it was a string of murders that went on in his home town that entailed a group of individuals who were sacrificing others in a ritualistic manner for occult reasons.

I’ll update with a picture someday.
