Name: Melasine (Pronounced MEL-uh-sign)
Age: 46
Gender: Female
Race: Mermaid
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Power Level: Mid-Tier Medium (5)
Timeline: Medieval
Clan: Sea Fire
Stature/Status: Hunting Squadron Leader
Appearance: Though beautiful as any other mermaid in her clan, Melasine's appearance is thought by many to be a little jarring, fire itself seeming to have manifested in her. Bright even for a Sea Fire maiden, her eyes glow with shades of orange and yellow and her lips are as rubies. Reds in her straight hair give way to these same shades before darkening once more at the tips, and while her skin is fair, her tail is a streak of oranges and reds, faint black spots marking the top and small orange-yellow, almost spiky-looking fins at her sides. Melasine's tail fins are elongated, the ends whisker-like, whip-like, even, bearing a resemblance to those of tropical fish; several noticeable albeit small scars mark the right one. She has a fondness for headdresses and can most always be seen sporting one, crafted of coral and responsible for keeping her long hair up. The edges of her eyes are marked decoratively with a curving, almost Egyptian design. She enjoys bracelets. A dagger of coral is always on her person.
(I have a drawing of her, too, but no scanner! So that will have to wait.)
Personality: Melasine is not what you would call a social mermaid. She works well enough with others, indeed, likes others well enough, but she prefers to spend her free time alone and speaks little. That is not to say she is without friends; her position as a hunting leader has garnered quite a few, all of whom she appreciates and cares for immensely. She simply prefers the small pleasures of silence to the rambunctious play of her clan members.
If there is one thing to be said about her it is that she is fascinated with the mythos of the sea. There is an ingrained awe within her of the great, nigh endless depths of her world, and she finds a certain sacredness to any and all stories about it. Sailor's tales, religious myths, song lyrics, anything mentioning the ocean is worth hearing. The sea is her church, her temple, and it is not uncommon for her to experience visions while meditating in the waters away from her clan. These are often just of other places but leave her with a sense of longing she can't explain. Whether they actually exist, of course, is another matter entirely.
Religiosity aside, however, honor is the most important part of Melasine's life. She lives by a strict personal code, stricter, one might say, than that of any normal Sea Fire maiden. Among the many rules set for herself she must always apologize to any being she kills and thank it if it be for food (reverence for life). She must never hunt without necessity. She must perform daily rituals in honor of prosperity, health and happiness. She must help when asked for. She must not hate. And a whole plethora of other stuff. Breaking any of her personal codes is unthinkable; however, if it should somehow happen she will double efforts to make up for whatever rule(s) broken. Her code of honor strikes many as absurd, but it has wrought much good in the mermaid's life--except for a child. It is known that even the Dark Fathom hold a tentative respect for the woman, and she for them, but she has yet to bear a child, a fact that greatly saddens her.
History:
In times far gone, the Sea Fire maidens that would become Melasine's ancestors were befallen by terrible luck. Seasons came and seasons went, but try as they might these women could not conceive. Some called them cursed. Others suggested they no longer held the favor of the goddesses. Whatever the case, it became clear to them over time that if they wanted children they were going to have to search outside of the sea. Even this, however, bore few results, and in desperation they decided to try anything and everything they could think of. This began with a strict revision of their daily life, a new set of rules that would eventually become Melasine's own code of honor. They prayed fervently. They performed daily rituals. And lo and behold, when the next breeding season came they were able to conceive, some even lucky enough to bear children by humans. Prosperity was restored to these maidens...at least until they ceased their rituals and eased on the rules they had set for themselves. The fertility, it appeared, had not been permanent. Their 'curse' was still active. Thus it became known that what they had learned would have to be passed through every generation lest their 'curse' render their bloodline extinct, and it has been so ever since. Melasine's reverence for the sea, her rituals and her strange honor code are all efforts to appease some angry goddess or spirit, and she searches always, in her quiet way, for a permanent cure to her bloodline's apparent infertility. She has begun to worry, however, that even the age-old traditions passed to her from her mother are no longer enough. After all, she certainly has had the desire for a daughter in the past, and she has followed every rule for as long as she can remember, but she has yet to conceive. The news of the coming humans, therefore, brings her hope. Though cautious about the race that nearly drove her own to extinction, Melasine is a little more optimistic than her fellow Sea Fire maidens and views the coming visit as an opportunity. Perhaps a human could offer some insight into her problem. Is it really a curse, is it just a terrible misfortune, are her visions the cause? Her grandmother had her mother with a human rumored to have minor magical abilities; perhaps the magic came from an unhealthy source that passed to her.
Whatever the case, Melasine is willing to do whatever it takes to finally end her family's bad luck.
Powers:
-Natural telepathy
-High-speed swimming
-Hunting/fighting prowess
-Minor clairvoyance (The places and, much more rarely, people Melasine sees in her visions are real. She, however, has no idea.)
-Minor heightened senses (As a result of meditation she can usually sense the approach of others much faster than normal, but that is all.)
Equipment: A coral dagger.
Weakness(es):
As mentioned previously, breaking her own rules is unthinkable and Melasine will do almost anything to avoid it. This can create very unfavorable situations should she be torn between trying to follow a rule and something else.
