Sparks flew in the morning air as the Dragon Sword clashed against the white claws of the biomechanical monster, the sounds of their battle filling the morning air, but the monster had two hands and the red ranger only had one sword. It parried the blade with one set of claws and mauled the ranger across the helmet with the other, sending him spinning away, bouncing off the ground once, twice before slamming against the concrete embankment behind him.
"This is your power, human?" the monster demanded. "I don't believe it." It began to glow, first only an outline, but then brighter until it couldn't be seen through the light. Then the light grew to an incredible size. One story, two stories, five, eight and higher. When it stopped, the light faded, leaving behind the monster, now gigantic. "Come! Show me your full power! Or I'll crush this town to oblivion!"
The ranger pulled himself up and began to motion, but a green hand moved in front of him. "You know he wants you to do this," Morphaeus told him. "You don't know why."
"And I don't have a choice," the young man answered. "If I don't, he'll destroy the city. Whatever he did, I can't contact the others and you're in no shape to fight. Why do you care, anyway?"
Where the demon general's eyes should have been narrowed. "Because I don't like traps."
Up above, the monster raised one massive foot. "I'm waiting, human! Call your dragon!" He moved his foot over slightly, so that it hovered over the daycare center. "Or I put the kiddies to bed forever!"
The red ranger shoved Morphaeus out of the way and thrust his hand into the air. "Red Fire Dragonzord Power!" His vision shifted, zooming away to a faraway volcano that exploded with lava as a massive red dragon burst from its mouth, sending stone, molten and solid, flying in his wake as he filled the brimstone-clogged sky with his battle roar. Immediately, he took to the air, rushing at incredible speeds toward the battle, and as he did so, red lightning rushed over his form, and where it passed, scales changed to metal plates, organic joints shifted to machine, its wings became great spiked sheets as it continued to rush in.
When the dragon arrived only an instant after its summoning, the red ranger jumped with all his strength, sending him shooting up to the dragonzord with a cry. He landed on the head for a moment before dropping down into the cockpit within. Immediately, it began undergoing another change, its body parts reconfiguring in midair until it landed, a bipedal humanoid figure that immediately took a fighting stance.
"Finally!" the white creature declared, setting its foot down. "Now, I say again, human. Show me your full power!"
The zord bent down into a charging stance as fire leaped up from its right hand before solidifying into a blade. "I don't know what you're planning, tin-face," David answered from the cockpit, "but I'm going to make sure you don't get the chance to pull it off! Phlogiston!"
Ready!
"Dragon Fire Charge!"
Fire erupted from the blade as the zord dashed forward, then exploded to cover the entire zord as its speed increased to incredible levels, intending to strike its finisher on the monster right from the start.
But the white being just braced its feet, then at the last moment, grabbed the zord's arms, bringing it to a complete stop.
"What?" the ranger demanded. "No way! He just up and stopped us? It's not possible!"
But then the monster started to laugh as the fire that had surrounded the zord began to encircle it, as well, and the arms began to sink into the creature's hands. "Yes! Yes, this is perfect! This is exactly what I sought! Exactly what I was meant for!"
David, the dragon's voice entered the ranger's mind urgently, get out! Get out now!
"What's he doing to you, Phlogiston?"
No time! Get out NOW!
Before the ranger could object again, he was teleported out of the cockpit in a flash of red lightning and was sent falling toward the ground. By the time he hit it, rolling, he had been unmorphed, and he grunted as he pushed himself up. The light, now the orange of the sun, had surrounded the two again, and all that could be heard was that laugh. Still, the teenager screamed up at the sight, screaming the name of his partner over and over again, despite the impossibility of being heard, and then drowned out entirely by one chilling proclamation.
"We ... are ... HELIOS!!!"

Five multicolored figures were on the television, the white one speaking. "This is going to sound like a strange request," he stated, "but we need help. One of our machines was absorbed by another machine of some sort, and the combined power is too much for us to take alone. We've made several attempts, but we're faced with the knowledge that for once, the strength of the Dragon Rangers may not be enough. We know there are other people in the world with abilities beyond that of the average person, and we need their help."
At the end of the segment, the newscaster came back on, saying, "On the absence of the Red Ranger, who had been presumed to be the group's leader, the self-proclaimed Rangers claim that he is not part of the resulting creation and did not join the others in their first television appearance because it was his personal machine that was the victim of the fusion and as a result, complications prevent him from presenting himself."
The camera switched to the newswoman sitting next to him who continued. "Calling themselves the Dragon Rangers, after the popular children's show Power Rangers, the group of unknown vigilantes have been considered heroes by most since their first appearance. In an emergency session of Congress today, however, Senator Marcus Riley expressed a very different viewpoint, and again in a press release after gaining resounding support on his proposal."
The video feed switched again and the senator filled the screen. "Have we as a nation forgotten that vigilantism is illegal, and for good reason?" he demanded. "We don't know who these people are, who they work for, or where they got their weapons, and we can only guess at what they are capable of. Now, one of their no doubt illegal weapons has gotten out of hand and they expect help? It's time to crack down on these criminals, and that's what they are. Stomping around in their giant machines has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage from seismic activity. Their breaking into gang wars with opposing factions constantly puts the lives of civilians in danger. It's time to end the games, it's time to clean up! We will be offering a sum of one million dollars to whoever can destroy this Helios weapon, as well as an additional five hundred thousand for each of their other giant weapons, and with any luck, it will put an end to their terrorizing of the people once and for all!"
