The air began to quake with the ferocity of the trumpet blasts that sounded over the tremendous crowd's cheers. Down below the in the arena the one of the four gates opened and out walked a knight whose platinum armor gleamed dully in the midday sun. Raising his polished sword into the air as he reached the center, he addressed the roaring crowd, his voice, one of a great volume, "Welcome all to the event you all have been anticipating all year, 'The Kokuryu Tournament'. It is here, in this legendary arena, forged for the gods themselves to fight, that warriors of legend and power will test their might against each other. These walls will either make or break each of our combatants!" And with that he plunged the polished sword into the stone below.
The crowd was set ablaze in a fury of cheers. It was here that each and every year they saw their idols, heroes, and self-proclaimed gods fight to the bloody end. Above the roar the knight's voice roared, " LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He held his arm out gesturing to the four people standing to his right. "We will be having a four-man tournament to start the action this year. The fighters you see to my right are Seiji Satoshi, Father John Anderson, Jim "The Fifth Horseman" Whales, and Shade." He clapped his hands and a panel slowly raised to his left with the names of the combatants filled into a tournament bracket. "Shade vs. Jim and Seiji vs. John will be our first round of fights. The winners of these two bouts will then fight each other for today's title."
The knight walked out of the the arena and the combatants paired with their opponent and moved to either side of the area as they had been instructed. A barrier shot up to separate the barren, rectangular coliseum. A trumpet blast split the air and signaled the beginning of the two bouts.
((Heh, sorry. Had no internet yesterday. ))
What had been named as Shade by the announcer turned out to be just a small calico cat. It wasn't acting quite like a cat tho in that it was acting more like a dog, using its hind leg to scratch its ear and wagging its tail. When its name was called out as well as its opponent's, it got up and walked with a slight bounce in its step to the indicated side of the arena. As the wall went up it faced its opponent, and let out a high-pitched bark.
[Toriji(Jim) vs Ketaro(Shade) #2]
"What the hell!!!" Jim looked around in an immensely confused state that clearly showed on his face. "I'm supposed to be fighting cat-dog over here? I don't even know how to respond to something like this." He looked around, still confused by his odd opponent. "Does anyone know if there was a mix-up of something. Did they mail my opponent to a kennel or something by mistake?"
[Jim vs. Shade #3]
The now labeled 'catdog' made a sound similar to coughing but was most likely laughing considering the situation. It did its little bouncey walk and approached Jim, stopping at his feet and looking up at him. More proper to its appearance it gave a small meow that then turned into a purr.
[Seiji vs John #1]
The oriental youth that was introduced as Seiji waved his arms proudly in the air as he waved to the audience, prancing before them all the way over to his section of the arena. It wasn't until the walls went up that he took his first good look at his opponent.
"Huh," he miffed as a scythe with a sickly green energy blade appeared in his right hand and he leaned against it. "Father Anderson, did he say? I get to fight a man of the cloth, huh?" He grinned out of the right side of his mouth as he winked his left eye and rubbed his nose with the index finger of his left hand. "It's like every catholic orphan's dream, and I actually get to live it. Lucky me, eh? I'll bet this is where you bore me into submission with some long, lecturing sermon, right?"
Jim vs Shade #4
Jim scratched his head in confusion. He looked down at the cat, sure it was cute enough, but what was it doing there? "This is too weird." He reached down to pet the cat against all of his instincts telling him to stab it.
[Jim vs. Shade #5]
As Jim reached down to pet it, its paw came up and met his hand in what could only be a high-five. It then, somehow breaking a rule of nature, gave what was quite obviously a smirk or maybe closer to being an evil grin despite that cats definately shouldn't be able to make such expressions. Next thing Jim knew the cat had exploded upward in a greyish, oozy substance that made to engulf the majority of his arm.
Jim vs Shade #6
"What the hell!" Jim lurched back so hard that he fell to the ground, and out of reflex he unsheathed his sword and slashed it at the oozy substance.
[Johnathan vs. Seiji #2]
Johnathan grinned at the young boy. He took the time, while the boy spoke, to tie his shirt around his waist, and slid into a modified boxer stance. He was weary of the scythe, but it seemed to be made of some kind of energy. "I should warn you my child, I have been in the military. I may be a man of God, but I will give you a whoopin just like any schoolboy should have."
[Jim vs. Shade #7]
The sword met little resistance, really it was just as tho he had tried to cut water. It instantly pulled itself together and lunged forward at its now fallen foe.
[Johnathon vs Seiji #3]
"The military?" the boy asked as if he had just found out they had the same hometown. "No kidding?" He thumbed to his chest with his free left hand proudly. "J.S.R.F. Japan, five years active duty. What branch and nation did you serve in?"
[Jonathan vs. Seiji #4]
Johnathan laughed. "Italian army. I was a part of the Sassari as a captain, before my dad pushed me into being a clergymen like tradition goes. Never saw anything dangerous, but I did almost get reassigned to become a Carabinieri in Rome." He spaced slightly remembering the past, his stance slacking.
[Johnathon vs Seiji #5]
The boy arched an eyebrow as he twirled the scythe idly. "You joined the Cloth just out of tradition? That doesn't seem like a very good reason to make that kind of decision ..."
[Jim vs Shade #8]
Out of shock Jim's natural instincts and reflexes were for naught in this situation. He shouted muffled curses at the blob that had overtaken him. 'This is not good' He thought. 'If I'm knocked out in the first round, I'll never be able to show my face to the others at the Soul Society.'
[Johnathan vs Seiji #6]
"It was either the cloth or medical discharge. Now enough about the past. I believe you had asked for a paddling child?" Johnathan tightened his stance once more, shifting his weight so he was lower to the ground, and watched the scythe wielding Jap. He wanted the man to get closer so that he could negate the scythe and try to get a good grip and negate the soldier himself. That was the problem though, that scythe. If that was swung and he could not get out of the blade range in time, there goes his fingers and that would not help him any.
