He rolled his soda in one hand, thinking over the sound of the ice tumbling inside. "I'm just here doing my thing. Having fun with you, that is."

She motioned with her hands, starting with them together, palms against each other, then mimed a widening gulf. "It's like a city cut in half by a flooding river. Even if the two halves rebuild from the destruction and learn to live apart, they still are forever lesser for the loss of their other half."
