Name: Project Epsilon: Lucubro (Occasionally tolerates "Luke.")
Age: Appears to be in his early twenties.
Gender: Male
Race: Pyran- Genetically mutated
Alignment: Lawful Neutral / Chaotic Neutral
Power Level: High Tier- Medium
Timeline: Modern - Futuristic
Appearance:
Hair: Black and stringy, allowed to hang around jaw-length.
Eyes: Entirely black, tend to leak something like ink when Lucubro is irritated.
Skin: Navy-black, blotchy and streaked, offset by his fangs' obsessive whiteness.
Build: Moderate, but very defined and cut, in more ways than one.
Blood: Dark blue
Attire: Usually, a grey militaristic jacket and pants, black undershirt, white gloves and boots.
Height: 5' 6"
Weight: 140
Outstanding Features: As of reactivation, a wide, mottled sear across his chest. And a nose ring.
Personality: Before he was murdered, Lucubro was of a colder disposition, the only obligations programmed into him being to Mogg, both the official god and emperor of Pyra. Unlike his counterpart, Nova, Lucubro's obligation soon stretched to include his teammates, but no farther. Like the Guardians before him, he possessed scant emotions, devoting his little passion to bizarre spells and experiments on fuzzy animals and, occasionally, his teammates, of which only Aspectus tolerated, and then only in the name of science.
When he was rebuilt by Deflagron scientists and allowed the full spectrum of emotion, Lucubro became excessively bitter and withdrawn, understandably upset about being destroyed by his own government and still untrusting of the one that now sponsored his team. He has always been a realist and considered by many a pessimist, but now this pessimism is amplified by spite. Like Aspectus, Lucubro also suffers frequent mood swings. Not fully adjusted his new level of emotion, at odd times he'll come out of his darker demeanor to assist Impendo in catching butterflies, or flirting shamelessly with just about anything that wears a skirt. Due to new distractions and restrictions, Lucubro seldom has a chance to practice his macabre habit of collecting "discarded" body parts to use in his projects, much to his displeasure.
Unlike his other teammates, Lucubro inwardly knows his Commander is dead. This fact he openly only discusses with Rush, for while he tolerates Impendo's childlike level of optimism, Aspectus' obsessive faith will set him off.
History: (Probably ought to skip over this, unless you've read Veritas Alpha.)
Against the invading Deflagron forces, the Northern Empire of Pyra was overwhelmed, out-manned and out-gunned by more advanced Deflagron technology. A few years into the hopeless war, Emperor Mogg's magiscientists presented him with a far-fetched solution to save valuable lives and improve morale. The scientists introduced it as projects Alpha and Beta, two genetically altered Pyrans, gifted with previously unheard of levels of power.
These were the prototypes for a full team of such beings, quickly titled "Guardians."
Eight years in to the project, the fifth member of the team was developed, Project: Epsilon, stranger than the Guardians before him in habit and tolerance level. He specialized in shadow-control and unholy arts, at first a shocking combination to the highly religious Veritas, Alpha ranger and the team's Commander.
Fortunately, Lucubro's programmed loyalty to the reigning emperor inclined him to use these habits for a more fanatical level of worship, including flashy, gory sacrifices and what he terms, "Plasmic tithing". Veritas soon regarded these habits with respect when Mogg began to favor them over her traditional practices.
It slowly became evident, upon the long-awaited release of the sixth team member, Project: Zeta, that Mogg favored many things about the newer Guardians. Zeta, codenamed Nova, was granted a full spectrum of emotion, and, in addition to his light-elemental powers, miscellaneous powers that Commander Veritas was not informed of. She was also not informed of the significant change in programming in both Lucubro and Nova, specifically the aligning of both solely to Emperor Mogg instead of the Law and Honor system that she and the other three Guardians were tied to.
Things went relatively smoothly for three more years, and the previous four Guardians and even Lucubro became cold and impatient with the egotistic Nova, alienating him from the team. In turn, he did the same to them, disregarding direct orders and refusing to allow himself to be possessed in battle. Veritas never fully adjusted to this new weakness in the team, but managed well enough, coming to accept it as a flaw in his program, for which the techs were to blame.
Managed well enough, that is, until Nova blatantly ignored an order to pair up with the significantly weaker Aspectus during a sizable battle, causing the other critical injury. While Nova had still carried more than his own weight, finishing the fight quickly, he was strictly chastised. The psionist was given time to recover, and none of the Guardians thought anything of it. The following day, however, the psionist was found half-dead in his quarters, strangled. When Lucubro hauled a guilty Nova out of the room at gun point, it became clear that things were going to change.
This was the catalyst action that would, in time, reveal Mogg's decision to dispose of the older, less morally flexible Guardians with the newer, more malleable versions. The Emperor had but one fear, and that was a rebellion. For hundreds of years he'd ruled with an unforgiving fist, guising his actions as the will of Pyra's benevolent god, himself. In truth, the Emperor did possess a god-like level of psychic prowess, and soon he came to see Project: Beta's potential as a threat.
Nova was cast from the team, reported to Mogg and accused of betrayal. Unknown to the remaining Guardians, Mogg never informed the public of Nova's decision to go rogue.
Days later, Veritas disappeared from the base as well. With Aspectus weak and both the Commander and Nova gone, the Guardians became more reclusive, avoiding missions and the public eye. When Veritas returned, it was plain that she'd been injured somehow, but she refused to explain herself, locking herself in her quarters without a word. The missions resumed, but Veritas wouldn't come out of her room, issuing vague orders through the door.
For three weeks this went on, until Aspectus was able to coax her out. When she did, Lucubro said nothing about her bizarre new pattern of speaking or how she seemed to tremble at every shadow, but it couldn't be ignored for long. Almost immediately the alarm sounded, and the Guardians had another mission. Instead of taking the lead, the changed pyrokinetic hid behind the others.
It would be her first and last time to do so. Just outside the Gates, Nova waited, all smiles.
The fight was a disaster from the beginning. While Veritas stood paralyzed with fear, Aspectus' weakness prevented him from covering Rush, who was stopped and thrown. The speedster didn't rise again, her spine broken against the black granite walls. The psychic was left open, and in a second Nova's hatchet was buried in his chest. With only Impendo and Lucubro left, Nova grew some sixty stories taller and crushed the former in his grasp.
As is common knowledge, mere shadows fail against the much greater power of light. Lucubro held some hope for Veritas to snap out of her terrified daze and assist him, but as he burned alive in a trademarked Solaris Blast, his last sight was that of the remaining Guardian turning her back to run away.
Some weeks later, Lucubro woke to find himself strapped down in a Deflagron laboratory, alive. Alive, and enraged.
When the Deflagrons told them the truth behind the entire fiasco, of Mogg's corrupted rule, Nova's alleged heroism and Veritas' banishment, he reacted, for the first time, with emotion: a new feature built into him and the others. Torn from them were their artificial loyalties to the Northern Empire, and they were easily coerced into fighting for the Deflagron cause.
As "Epsilon", Lucubro is the least in rank of the four resurrected Guardians, but quite possibly the most powerful. Unlike his traitorous counterpart, however, he still follows orders and is entirely loyal to his comrades and their interests.
-
Powers: Lucubro's primary ability is "shadow sensitivity", an umbrella title for shadow-related powers. This term extends to more figuratively cover other areas of dark expertise, as well, though these carry an Unholy attribute, whereas his elemental ability is neutral.
Shadow Manipulation- Lucubro can "create" shadows by pushing light away. He can use this ability to blind opponents and create solid black illusions and sillhouettes. This ability has been highly practiced and refined.
Shadow-Port- Lucubro can merge with a deep shadow, only to come out of another, a limited from of teleportation, marked by a faint puff of smoke when he does.
Invisibility- In medium light, Lucubro can vanish at will, but too much light will prevent him from doing so.
Night Vision- Lucubro sees perfectly in total darkness as well as average lighting.
Shadow Tracking- Lucubro can sense disturbances in shadows, sudden increases or decreases that would indicate recent footsteps or use of a flashlight.
Dark Arts- Lucubro is a habitual user of spells and unholy magic, to an obsessive level. The more cultish, the better. He utilizes minor spells and chants in combat, and he keeps a few potions and powders on him, though these are limited in effect and usually only serve to distract or blind the average troublemaker.
Heresy- A side effect of his fanaticism, Lucubro frequently cuts and re-cuts runic symbols into his hands and arms (and, well, pretty much everywhere) to ward him or allow him to cast certain spells more quickly. These are most commonly Unholy-attributed blasts of energy, but a few allow him minor plant-control. This, in combination with his Shadow Manipulation, allows him to "summon" perfectly solid creatures of his own design, the most popular being a five-stories tall two headed dragon named Zack and Weezy, an oversized griffon, snakes, and vermin.
Possession- All Pyrans have the ability to possess and take the mind of another living thing, taking control of their body and abilities.
Weapons:
The Darkchain- Lucubro's primary weapon, a shape-shifting chain. It is disguised as a belt, which he wears at all times as part of his uniform. This weapon has the capability to stretch as long as he needs it to. If exposed to extreme light, it will disintegrate back to it's original form.
Weakness: Lucubro can be extremely hateful at times, lashing out at his own teammates just because of their optimism. Physically, Lucubro can't stand any great amount of light, it will render him handicapped and unable to use most of his abilities. Holy artifacts will burn him.
-
Notes: Lucubro can be played pre-murder and post-murder. Either way has a significant impact on his personality, but I didn't really want to make two separate profiles for him just for a religion change.
