I initially actually wrote this for a competition I'd entered some time ago. I didn't -win-, when it came to that, but I managed to qualify for the finals with this essay. It's abstract, but the topic I got was something along the lines of, "You find yourself lost one day. Describe your experience."
They probably didn't mean -this- kind of experience. XD
“Hello?”
“Hello?”
“Jesse! Can you hear me?”
“Jesse! Can you hear me?”
Within the silent stillness of the mist in which I find myself enshrouded, my cries fall upon naught but stone and ground. The words reverberate in a never-ending echo, much like the effect garnered by three-feet amplifiers.
I had long abandoned hope of receiving echoed replies sent by persons other than myself. Hours of fruitless shrieking had brought upon me a thirst for water that I could not find. Yet, it seemed as if the one thing that I could do was to cry out for aid. In between hoarse pleas and silent tears of fear, I’d lost all thought of time. It had seemed such years ago since I’d found myself within this alternate plane.
The day had begun like so many others. The sun hung bright from the skies as I’d left my home with my best friend. We’d planned an outing at the beach, complete with picnic basket, beach-ball, and sun-tan lotion. He’d offered to drive, as public transport with our picnic supplies seemed near impossible. Laughing at the prospect of a full day together, we’d set off.
I must have fallen asleep. There is no other way to explain the strangeness of my surroundings which I would have been loath to enter, had I been conscious.
The area about me seems an enigmatic haze. I am only able to see two feet around me in either direction. Silver mist falls thick about my still form, seeping inexplicably from the snow-white ground. Above me, the skies are dark, reminiscent of a chilly winter’s night. Stars twinkle upon the darkness of the sky; fairy lights within the shadows of the night.
“Where am I?”
Musing silently to myself, I am only mildly aware of the mist rising slowly to greater heights. Soon, it has engulfed me within its foggy depths; my breathing falls shallow as I crumble onto the ground. My fingers scrabble helplessly within the soil; my eyes begin to water.
“It is not yet your time, child.” The whispered words echo gently within the mist about me, though I am quite unable to hear.
A steady beeping begins to fill my ears as the mist clears. For a moment or two, I lay still, a single hand clutching my weakly beating heart. A light hovers over me, a light so bright I am able to feel its warmth. Slowly, I allow my eyes to flutter open; however, almost immediately, I regret doing so, for the sight that greets my eyes brings a lump to my throat.
Jesse lies beside me, his dark, and yet lifeless eyes gazing straight at me.
“We have a steady heartbeat, doctor. Shall I notify her parents?”
“Yes. And his, too—“
I gaze silently upon a chart beside Jesse’s inert form. Cause of death: Blunt force trauma to the head as a result of a car accident.
“At least we saved her from the underworld.”
My gasp is caught in my throat, and I am unable to move. I am frozen. Even as the tears begin to fill my horror-struck eyes, the nurse lifts a cerulean-coloured cloth over Jesse’s body.
He is gone.
They probably didn't mean -this- kind of experience. XD
