Name: Oylandra
Age: 844
Gender: Female
Race: Cecaelia, Mutant Mermaid
Alignment: Neutral Evil, Malefactor
Power Level: 7
Timeline: Medieval
Appearance:
Personality: Oylandra's sultry, golden eyes are windows to a dark and meticulous mind. She is highly secretive--believing that none can be opposed, who cannot be found. Cunning and cruel in her methods of manipulation, Oylandra will always seek out others to do her bidding for her, preferring not to sully her hands if it can be avoided. Much of her time is spent in deep meditation which allows her consciousness to search the aether for the secrets to ever greater power as a means of "perfecting" herself. Though a way to true immortality still eludes her, Oylandra's appetite for magic has long since discovered the secret to eternal youth, which she jealously guards. She will never tolerate anyone who's beauty surpasses her own. Her deepest desire is to discover a way to breed, and to see her offspring replace mermaids as the rulers of the world's oceans.
History: Oylandra's mother would have eaten her, if she'd only had the chance to look at her. The ailing maid had died giving birth to a wretched and loathsome child, disgusting to behold. Instead of a sleek and powerful mermaid tail, the baby girl had been cursed with eight hideous tentacles that twisted and tied themselves in knots as she cried out to be held. That year many of the Dark Fathom clan's newborns had been hideously misshapen. These unwanted daughters were devoured as a consequence of their weakness by their savage mothers. But here they were faced with a new horror. No infant born before her had been such a monstrous creature, and none had been the only daughter of the matriarch.
There was much fear and doubt as to what should be done with baby Oylandra. Weakness could not be allowed to taint the clan, yet the daughter of a matriarch was to always be revered. The mermaids fought and argued, surrounding their fallen queen and her horrid offspring, unwilling to compromise. When Dark Fathom's greatest warrior tried to settle to augment by forcibly eating the baby herself, little Oylandra's eight legs coiled around the elder maid's neck, snapping it instantly. From that point on, the girl would be raised as the heir to Dark Fathom. Without question.
Time saw Oylandra develop into womanhood. Gradually she grew stronger, smarter, becoming the ravishing queen she was meant to be. Though pleasing for a time, such power and beauty did little to assuage her mounting frustration and resentment. As Dark Fathom continued to prosper in the deep ocean, other mermaid clans the world over were slowly being pushed to extinction. Though they were wholly inferior in Oylandra's sight, they were also resources she could ill afford to lose if her bid for ultimate power was to succeed.
By the time she was 100 years old, Dark Fathom's matriarch had yet to conceive and bear a child. Many of Oylandra's highest subjects, who were already mothers to numerous daughters, began to wonder if she ever would. Being born a monster was one thing, but having a barren womb in a society that worshiped fertility, was quite another. It wasn't long before conspirators began to whisper with intent to overthrow their once feared ruler. But Oylandra was too smart to allow herself to be slain by something as petty as a misguided coup d’état.
She had been aware of the plot against her for years, and as she continued to develop her own plans the cunning sorceress knew her place as matriarch could no longer serve her ends. Her birthright had become a liability that threatened to end her life before she had the power to overcome death, and to make her vision a reality. On the secretly appointed night for her assassination, Oylandra could not be found. She had disappeared into the abyss, embarking on a dark pilgrimage that would take her across the world's oceans and even into the aether itself before finally nettling herself into the labyrinth of underwater caves that run under the Aaron Isles.
Powers:
Eternal Youth - Though not immune to death by trauma, Olyandra is ageless.
Heightened Strength - This is most prevalent in her tentacles--strong enough to crush boulders yet delicate and dexterous enough to manipulate even the tiniest objects.
Astral Projection - A power which evolved from Oylandra's natural telepathic abilities, allowing her to invade the dreams of others and explore other realities. Such power even offers glimpses of the infinitude of possible futures.
Ink Cloud - An inherent ability in all lesser octopi. However, Oyladra's ink is poisonous. She herself is immune to it's effects, but the poison is seldom fatal and acts more like a kind of underwater pepper spray, inflaming eyes and gills, and with enough effort her poison glands can produce a noxious haze large enough to cover several miles.
Morph - An alteration technique which allows Oylandra take on the appearance of a normal mermaid for the purposes of deception. The morph effect can also be applied to other creatures with any number of possible effects. She can turn a humble seahorse into a horrifying monster, or turn a mermaid into another cecaelia like herself.
Essence Drain - A time consuming spell that saps life energy and fertility from young mermaids. Most often the victims must be young girls who are "virgins" in the sense that they have not yet conceived a child, which would otherwise thwart the spell's effects. The absorbed energy brings Oylandra ever closer to her first pregnancy and also helps to fuel and strengthen her powers.
Lightening Bolt - Oylandra's greatest offensive spell, made possible by her magical staff. Each discharge can have varying degrees of power. At it's weakest level, it's nothing more than a painful but otherwise harmless electric shock. But when charged to the highest magnitude, Oylandra becomes capable of summoning powerful thunderstorms.
Crystal Shards - Another power of Oylandra's staff. One or dozens of white, razor sharp crystals can be summoned and shot at foes or made to orbit Oylandra in a protective ring. However, the shards cannot me made to do both at the same time
Equipment: Oylandra's Staff
Weakness: Oylandra's staff is the source of all her lightening and shard spells, and acts as a kind of amplifier for all of her other powers. Without it, she would be severely handicapped. Her octopus-like nature makes her much slower in water than mermaids, who also have the lungs Oylandra lacks. Even though her morph ability can grant her the ability to breath air, Oylandra cannot leave the water for long. No matter what her form, if Oylandra begins to dry out she will revert to her true form. She would then slowly suffocate as she struggles with the weight of her own tentacles, unaided by the buoying effect of water.
