Name: Dr. Gregory Bass
Age: 223 years old, he doesn't look it but he doesn't look young either.
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Alignment: neutral
Power Level: I think he is a 4
Timeline: mid 1800s to modern
Appearance:
Dr. Bass does not appear to be either young or old. Or even somewhere in the middle. His skin is patchy and with differing exact skin pigmentation. Most of the patches of skin are on parts of the body that will not be seen. The patches of differing skin are sewn together on his body. His eye colors do not always match color wise. His hair is going grey and his face has several replacement flaps of skin sewn onto it where it has begun to fall apart. Most of the skin on his body has been replaced at least once and in some cases more than once. Most of his internal organs have also been replaced several times. Dr. Bass' voice hands are the one part of his body that do not appear to have been replaced at some point, (this last part is dependent on the time period, by modern he will have substituted his hands for replacements at least once.) Dr. Bass takes great care to hide his condition from the ordinary people. He is a bit of a recluse and so normally does not go out into crowds. When he does go out in public he will wear gloves and a trench coat. His face though rather disturbing is not inhuman, it simply looks like he was in a rather nasty accident.
Personality:
Dr. Bass is a somewhat cold calculating man. However he is always interested in gaining new knowledge and secrets. This passion to know things can coax powerful enthusiasm and emotions from his normally cold exterior. Dr. Bass has an incredible desire to continue his existence, he does not want to die though he thinks that for him to die is impossible. Dr. Bass views degenerates and homeless folk as scum and they along with criminals are his preferred victims for what he must do. If he knew a way to continue his life without the replacements he would cease to do what he does.
History:
Dr. Gregory Bass was born in New England in 1787. As a kid he was always interested in gaining knowledge and learning how things worked. He grew up went to the premier schools at the time and studied to be a doctor. He had always had the interest in the way the body among other things worked. It was while he was studying at the university that he discovered something else. He was introduced to a professor who didn't specialize in the true science but in the old pseudoscience of alchemy. Dr. Bass listened spell bound to what the man said and one thing in particular caught his attention.
The Professor spoke that alchemy had a secret that could grant eternal life and Dr. Bass seized that opportunity. He began to look into this alchemy while he continued to be educated on his doctoring. After Dr. Bass left the university he went into practice in his small home town. He was very good at his doctoring but the thing he devoted much of his attention to was finding a secret, a formula for immortality. For once he possessed that he would be forever able to learn, all the things he could do without running out of time. The fire to know drove him onward as he experimented with exotic substances and procedures. It took 15 years before Dr. Bass finally figured out the formulae.
He obtained the necessary materials and ingredients and preformed the test of the formulae upon himself. He didn't feel any immediate difference after ingesting the formulae and he viewed it as a failure. He continued to work on finding a successful one and meanwhile continued to provide his services as the town doctor. It wasn't until a few years and several more experiments later that he discovered he had in fact succeeded previously.
He tripped while he had been carrying a scalpel. It penetrated into his right lung and punctured it. He should have been dead as his lung collapsed, he should have suffocated. But he didn't, his lung pained him and he was rather short of breath but he didn't die or even feel any real weakness from the injury. He for a while pondered this mystery but it wasn't until early the next year when his other lung failed that he realized something of how he now worked.
He had to replace those parts that were damaged or that decayed and broke in his body. These replacement parts would function perfectly for a time until they grew old and failed or were damaged as well. He did what had to be done to continue his existence.
He has since discovering how he worked returned to his studies, the studies of alchemy, of conventional science, the supernatural, pretty much anything he could learn he did, or at least tried to. When parts wore out or became damaged he replaced them, whenever possible he took these parts from criminals or convicted men and if that was not possible he would seek out the scum of humanity and use them for the replacements. He had to survive and learn more, for he could do so much for the world.
Over the years he has moved around incessantly, rarely staying in one place longer than a week or two at any one time. He has submitted his findings on science and his opinions on other subjects to various journals under various aliases for years and life goes on.
Powers:
Immortality- Dr. Bass is not truly immortal, his body parts will grow old and begin to fail, or become damaged like nearly anyone else's. His ability lies in the fact that this will not kill him, it will only make him less efficient until he can put in a replacement part. He can take a phenomenal amount of abuse before his body ceases to function.
Bodily knowledge- Dr. Bass is one of the most knowledgeable people alive on the anatomy and physiology of the human body. He knows hundreds of ways to kill someone with a small sharp object and equally many ways to incapacitate a person without killing them.
Alchemy- not necessarily a power but he has many potent solutions and powders that can do a wide variety of things. Some enhance healing, other are deadly poisons. A few burst into extremely hot flame under the right conditions. And others that the function of is unknown.
Equipment: An old fashioned black medical bag that contains his essential medical supplies and with a compartment that contains the large volume in which his notes are recorded. He also carries a gun, though he is loathe to use it. His preferred weapon is actually a scalpel.
Weakness:
Despite what one may think about Dr. Bass, he values life, when preforming a 'procedure' he will take utmost care to maximize the change of the subject surviving that may not be a weakness but the following relates to it. He is reluctant to kill someone unless they are directly attempting to kill him. He believes himself to be truly immortal but he is not and if his body sustains enough damage and the damaged parts are not replaced then he will eventually die. Or if he was incinerated or destroyed in some way similar to that he would die. Poisons will not kill Dr. Bass but they can incapacitate him and paralytic substances work just as well on him as any other human.
