Janis smiled after her and waved a bit, then stepped up to the guard and pulled out the four silver the old man had told him the toll would need, held it out for him to see, and dropped it into the case. "How's that?"
*Kegan*
Constance's eyes fell on the woman's prosthetic, though he was careful to keep his eyes closed. "In Rentis, ma'am, our prosthetic technology is quite good. If my brother were here, he'd probably be able to make you something a little more dextrous."

"That'll do," the iron-clad soldier replied with a nod of his helmeted head. he had to reach up, though, and lift the visor again after the action caused it to fall over his face. "Now, if you'll step aside for a mandatory security search of your person, and then you'll be on your way."
*Kegan*
The woman visibly eyed Constance, and would soon voice why. "You're from Rentis, too? Sorry, you just don't look like you're from the same place as that man. Huh, more dextrous...and here he said this was the best he could offer. I've half a mind to march back up there and give him a piece of my..."
At that, she grumbled on incoherently, pulling out a rag and vigorously wiping the already clean countertop.

The scientist nodded and moved over where the soldier motioned to wait for further instructions. "Would you like me to take my cloak off so you could make sure there's nothing under there? If so, I hope it's quick. I'm not very used to this cold."
*Kegan*
The man's eyes involuntarily snapped open at that. "You know someone else from Rentis?" he demanded quickly. "Do you know how to get there from here?"

The girl frowned a bit. "Well, I don't really do anything... suggestive. It's more a ritualistic dance from home... a few people have found it to be relaxing. And I play some bells in the background... and my jewelry adds to the melody, too."

The soldier shook his head, again causing the visor to slip over his eyes. He replied as he adjusted it, "No, that shouldn't be necessary, it's a simple search. Now, if you'll hold out your arms..."
*Kegan*
One of the men at the bar whispered to one of his buddies sitting next to him, and the both stealthily slid down the counter, away from the traveling duo. Thinking the worst might come from the barmaid, Igashu gave Constance a discrete nudge as he pretended to cleared his throat of a particularly difficult chunk from the stew.
But the woman was too frustratedly preoccupied to take special notice of Constance's new demeanor, much less his eyes. What's more, she actually seemed to work harder towards the pointless exercise, her brow furrowed "To hell if I would know anything about any Rentis place, beyond what was sold to me. Huh, you should find him easily enough, though; he's practically taken up residence in Darnathir's market, last I heard."
The woman stopped her work and gazed up at the young dancer. She sighed as she tried in vain to calm herself, gave up, and merely shrugged, "Well, I don't see why you shouldn't then. Who knows, maybe you'll be heard from the street; I could sure do with the customers."

Janis nodded and held his arms out, waiting patiently for the search.
*Kegan*
Constance closed his eyes quickly with the nudge from the prince. "Can you tell us what he looks like, what he's selling? And in his defense, some people are better at making prosthetics than others. That very well could have been the best he could do with his skill or resources."

The girl smiled from ear to ear. "Thank you very much." She said politely, clasping her hands together. The bracelets on her wrists jangled again and gave a melodious ring when the girl's hands hit eachother. She then leaned back a little bit in the wake of Igashu's "coughing". "Are you okay?" She asked.

((My apologies for leaving from roleplay so abruptly; glad that you guys are still in on this. Thanks.)) (If you don't mind Ninmast, I'll more or less cut the search; the wouldn't find anything on Janis anyway...)
*Stonebreach Pass*
"Alright, you're clear," the searcher stated rather boredly; the process had taken a short time, no more than a couple minutes, but the guards did as thorough a search as possible without being inappropriate about it.
Janis was almost shoved by the metal hands of a guard, past the armed checkpoint station and towards the looming gates of the fortress-wall...
*Kegan*
The barmaid mumbled an edgy "yes yes, of course," a comment that could have been directed towards either Constance or the girl; she idled over to odd man from Rentis and leaned against the counter on her good arm, almost studying him. Obviously, she didn't know he was watching her, as well. "Specifics? His shop was naught but a makeshift tent of sorts, last I was at the market. Hard to miss, he is. He should still be set up near the fountain in the old merchant square, selling all sorts of odd trinkets...has this old metal rod he swears is a weapon, something like a hand-held cannon, even. Hah, looks like a useless hunk of metal to me...even if it were a cannon, how could anyone expect such a tiny cannonball to do any damage? He's wearing a fancy-ish sort of suit...thing. Probably comes from across the sea, if you ask me. Trust me, he stands out."
Igashu missed most of the conversation. "Miraculously", almost as soon as the girl addressed him the piece "cleared". Turning and giving a smile, he responded, "Why yes, actually, much better! Thanks for asking...Dancer, eh? Will you be perfoming tonight?"

The scientist pulled his cloak back around his delicate form once more and moved on through the gates, taking in the interior of the gates as he searched for any signs of the Blood and Bones Inn.
*Kegan*
"My brother calls them guns," Constance explained the hand-held cannons to the metal-armed woman. "I can't use them, can't see to load them, and they're still not fully understood even by Rentisian scientists, but they fire the cannonball at such high speeds that it goes right through bone without slowing down. It's not for siege against stone walls, but against single opponents. It's perhaps better to say that a gun is to a cannon that a hand-crossbow is to a siege catapult. The same idea, but on a much smaller scale."

((I'd love to actually get past this point soon. Waiting on a couple people.))
*Kegan*
"Sounds like alchemist folly to me; I prefer the good old stabbity-stab, myself," the barmaid stated with a bit of a shrug and a grin, jabbing her prosthetic forward a couple times for emphasis. Glancing over at the Shameless Prince, she asked, "That wouldn't be your brother, would it? You two don't look much alike..."
*Stonebreach Pass*
The tunnel through the gates was exceptionally long; it took Janis nearly a full half-minute to traverse its torch-lit length and emerge from the other side.
The buildings were drab in their two-tone black-gray color, "Bavarian" style. The roadways showed signs of once being sturdily paved with stone, but the stones sunken into the muddy mire below in this high-traffic area. Farther in the crowds thickened around the street vendors that had spilled out of the marketplace and onto the general through-streets of the fortified settlement. Here, people jostled for position, blissfully ignorant of the frozen air or the falling snow, not only to look at wares but to simply move on through...
Various side-streets branched off, still paved and considerably less crowded. However, the buildings were smashed so close together down the alleyways that almost no light penetrated through, especially this late in the overcast day.

The small-framed scientist was actually getting bruised by all the jostling. It had been Janis' intention to stick to the main road to find the tavern, but after just a few minutes of it, he burst into the comparative emptiness of one of the side-streets. He took several deep breaths as he dusted himself off, straightening his robes, before moving on down the side street. He'd try to find a parallel backstreet to follow instead.
*Kegan*
"No, he's not," Constance answered. "His name is Igashu. My brother is Janis. Though I don't look much like him, either. I was adopted into the Meriodot family."

(Oh well, can't afford to stall much longer. Sorry, I'm moving this along now. Anyone's free to join in whenever they like, but I'd appreciate a PM and confirmation, first...)
*Stonebreach Pass*
It worked to Janis's benefit, then, that the settlement seemed to be constructed in a roughly grid-like manner. This would make it easier for Janis to follow the main corridor of travel, as dark and gloomy as his poorly-lit, immediate surroundings might be. Given the multitude of tiny, branching side-streets, finding the Blood 'n' Bones might be a more difficult task than first thought...
Even though it was a side street and off the main path, there were a good many people around, probably with the same detour idea as Janis, though unlike the scientist, they seemed to know where they were going. Perhaps they were regular visitors, or maybe they simply had good directions.
"Shouldn't never use th' main streets, if'n ya don't want t' adv'rtize you's a tourist and on't know where 'tis you's goin..." A scragly old man sat leaning between a large pile of barrels and the wall of one of the nearby buildings. Draped in rags that used to be clothes and pads that served as shoes, it was a miracle he hadn't yet been thrown out among the city of tents outside the gates. With another swig of a nerly-empty bottle of what smelled, from a distance, to be rum, he listed heavily to one side and grumbled on without reservation.
"Psh, matturs not, methinks...you's too much skin 'n' bones 'pon you t' be from here abouts..."
*Kegan*[/i]
The barmaid seemed to beging taking an interest in Constance during his explanation...mainly in the fact that she had just noticed he never opened his eyes. Maybe she would have commented upon it, but the orcish bartender strolled back over and distracted her, "Four rounds of the house special for the table of robe-y ones over there."
The barmaid nodded in recognition of the order, then glanced back to Constance, "Well, you two...enjoy yourselves, and good luck finding that rascal at the market." She turned and walked back through the opening to the kitchen; Constance had enough time to see her run a hesitant hand along the prosthetic before finding an evidently secret lever, causing the three fingers to snap rigid and oddly resemble a butcher's knife.
"You two here going to enjoy the festival?" asked the orcish barkeep as he began to pour four ales. "Big business, the festival. Much food and fun. Even if you're not here for it, it definitely wouldn't hurt t' partake. Only comes once a year."

(I hope this is okay for a first post, I'm still kinda confused about everything. O.o)
*Stonebreach Pass*
The chill air above one of the side streets seemed to vibrate heavily then waver. The area of activity was on enough for a human female to fit through, and no on should have noticed. It crackled like lightning and opened a hole, and looked as if it were a painting hung in midair, to another place. To anyone standing at eye level of it they would have been able to peer into it and see the distinct image of a robed figure running towards them. But anyone at eye level would have to be able to at least levitate.
The figure jumped through the hole landing with a thud and bounced off the muddy back street, becoming dirty to the newcomer's dismay. The newcomer began to unhitch the robe as he/she stood letting it fall to the ground. It was a sender woman with purple hair and black eyes, something of science fiction. She checked her alien clothing to see if she had gotten dirty under the robe, and upon finding herself clean, smiled boldly for the idea of bringing a robe along to help against dirtying herself on landing.
As if the idea suddenly came to her she began to look around and was shocked. She thought she had choose a place with no life signs, this time she got a choice where to land, and that the street was completely empty so that she may slip in unseen.
There next to where she had landed stood and old man, raggedy by her standards, and a frail male, no female? it was hard to tell.
She must had either: Interrupted something, done something they've never seen before, put the idea of witch into their mind (which she had hoped not, a few incidents of almost being 'burned at the stake' really put the idea/situation on her 'not to do list'), or some other horrible thing. From the looks of it, this universe/planet was about the equivalent of the middle ages on that other planet earth, that she had spent a considerable amount of time on.
"Umm...hi? I was wondering if you could tell me if magic or science exists here. . ." She said with a smile, hoping to temporarily take advantage of any surprise and astonishment that she had just given them.

The woman had turned to answer the old man when the purple girl dropped in, though oddly enough she seemed less surprised by it than the girl expected. "I'm afraid I couldn't tell you," was the answer, the voice no more giving away the inconspicuous gender than the appearance, both seeming rather effeminate. "Personally, I'm looking for an inn, the Blood and Bones Tavern."
*Kegan*
"A festival, huh?" Constance asked. "Here in this village, or on in where we're headed?"

Zionix still couldn't discern if the person who spoke was a male or female, but upon hearing her voice, she went with female. " Well, will there be someone at this inn who could tell me? Because frankly I cannot seem to fathom a reason one would not be able to tell me if magic or science existed in their world or not..."
