[-Character Development-]
The first step of Role-playing begins with Character Development. This is not a step to be taken lightly when Role-playing. Your character you play defines every aspect of how you should Role-play. Your character is a reflection of your Role-playing abilities, and people with highly developed characters that hold a wealth of details about their characters are almost guaranteed to be highly skilled Role-players.
Name
Now to begin the process of character creation, you must first create a name for your character. This is by far one of the simplest steps of character development, however, it requires some imagination.
[li] Settings
The world the role-play takes place in has a great influence on the names given to characters. In most cases, everyday names are used. In more developed and less flexible worlds of role-play that include a wealth of lore also tend to have unique names to them should have lore accurate names to blend easily with the world. Stories with flexible backgrounds allow for more selective names in character development. Thusly, role-plays taking place in worlds similar to ours typically have the names that people today have.
[/li][li] Species
If a role-play has mystical creatures such as elves and dwarves, then picking names for them may be more difficult then picking names for humans. If the role-play is sci-fi, then the possibility of alien species arises. In most cases, these names are entirely up to you.
[/li][li] Gender
Gender is another very important factor in the naming of any character. Obviously, Male names should be masculine, Female names should be feminine. Many names can be used by both genders and have no gender relation.
[/li][/ul]
After creating your name for your character, you should already know the gender you want for your character to have. In most cases there are Males and Females, however in some characters they may be no gender. Your character gender does not have to be your own gender in the real world.
Age
Age is another highly important factor in your characters. Although not always linear, the age of your character is often a measure of their maturity and experience. Younger characters would tend to be rash and strong headed. Older characters would tend to be more collective and less likely to fall into a trap. Do not forget however, there are always exceptions.
Appearance
Appearance is very important to visualizing your character. While personality is more important then appearances, it does mean you can put any less thought into it. In most cases appearance has only a few major influences. If your character is monstrously hideous, it is likely that he or she will be or has been shunned from society. The opposite is true for exceptional attractive characters. Most characters will fall somewhere between these two points.
Clothing
Clothing normally falls under appearance but some Role-players prefer this as a separate section in their sheets. It is essential that your characters clothing conforms to the basic environment they naturally will be exposed to. For example, in a cold environment role-play, one would not wear thin clothing nor would you wear a fur parka in a desert. Your clothing should also follow along with your species; this is more essential on alien characters.
Personality
Personality is entirely under your control when creating your character. Whichever way you wish your character to be you should describe. Although it may be hard to stay "In-character" all of the time, however you should consider how your character would approach a situation before making a decision. It is important to describe your characters overall personality. I will not give out examples seeing as how it is much better to create your own personality for your characters then following stereotypes. Granted, this is the can be one of the most time consuming parts, and replies almost entirely on your ability to follow.
Biography
The biography/history of your character is the most important, and what I feel is the most overlooked, aspect of your character. Your past should reflect how your character is now. But again, it is entirely up to you. In most cases your character may be slightly unspecific in the there history to allow more malleability, but if you wish to create a character entirely for one role-play, then they should blend with the story.
Please note that these are only the basic parts of a character. Most role-players will have more then just these, some will have less. It's under the control of the role-play’s creators what each character must have.

There is one thing I can point out about character creation that I don't recall seeing mentioned here, and that is weaknesses in your character. In my opinion, a good, well-developed character should have a set of strengths balanced with one or more weaknesses. For example, assuming a combat-oriented RP, you may have one character who is quick and agile, but not physically or magically strong. You could have a healer character who doesn't fight or can't fight well. You could have a magic user who is very physically weak. You could have a big, strong, massively armored character who is slow and unmagical.
It doesn't have to stop there. You can do all kinds of interesting things. Try a mage who can't quite seem to get it right. Try a powerful warrior who's dumb as a brick. Try something insane, or with weird phobias. The sky is the limit for your character. Be creative.
And for the love of crap, PLEASE stop taking a copy of a character from some anime, video game, comic book, etc. and throwing them in the RP, unless that particular RP happens to be the setting from which that character comes. If the creator of the thread has put some time and creativity into the RP, you should be able to do the same with your own character. If you just want to take the NAME of an already existing character, that's fine. I suck with names, so I'll steal one from time to time. Unique characters can make an RP very interesting.

Biographying your character
I know we are all used to seeing something like this:
Name: John Doe
Age: 27
Race: Gerbillinian.
etc.
I find reading these to get to know a character to be dreary, also it restrains evolution of a character. You may of said something in your really long profile, that is infact no good in having.
I find it more preferable to introduce, the description of the character as a page from a book:
Quote: from Sakaratte Dakiatte on 4:58 pm on Nov. 16, 2005
The winds we're blowing heavily in the skys over Kanoria, homeland of Kinorians, know as the angels of the lagoons. Over the last 20 years they have slipped away into hiding, fearing that other races were to kill them for their wings.
Sakaratte stood at the tip of the Lagoons mountain letting the wind whistle through his four wings, twitching them occasionally, to prevent a balloon of air from taking him into the sky.
"The peace has finally left the sky, The Kinorians have gone underground only to set out in the dark hours."
His wings give a rather large twitch as a strong bluster catch his wing tips.
"Its not a life that should be lived by any race and I refuse to live it. My fate will have been decided by the council if I don't do this now"
His feet leave the tip of the mountain and his huge crimson wings elevate him a few inces from the ground.
"I guess... this is goodbye"
He glides away from the mountain top at a slow pace, his heart heavy with sorrow. He looks back and tears fall to his eyes and his whistles away into the sky almost certainly never to return.
This on the other hand, starts by intoducing the character, provides description and information about the character in a more, enjoyable form.
[-Detailed Contribution-]
General
When Role-Playing it is essential that you use Paragraphs in your posts. Many low role-plays can consist of entirely of One Liners . For example:
*wakes up and walks around*
A post is VERY plain. It contains no detail about the setting, the character, or what the character is thinking. The first step of actually role-playing is to provide detailed posts.
Instead of posting something non-described like shown above, make a post that is as highly detailed as possible. The following is a much better post in every aspect in comparison to the previous example.
Rytak's consciousness slammed into his body like a thousand horses at once. His eyes opened and he instinctively jumped back into a hunched over pose. His eyes darted from either side of his surroundings for a moment or two taking in the lush and leafy forest that lay all around him. He realized he was in no noticeable danger at the time being. With a breath of relief he began looking for the nearest path.
Notice the second example leaves far less to mind and more open to an intelligent response. Even my example is often not enough. However for the purpose of this guide, it will serve its purpose.
Specifics
For describing an area in great detail its better to use some sort of Spatial order. For describing, this is the only way to describe an object or setting in great detail.
Describing events can be described in only one way. Chronological Order is the correct and only way to describe how events happen. Everything must be described in order of occurrences.
Taking it Further
Ok, so you've added a wealth of detail to your posts. You describe every event as it occurs and every part of the scenery gets some sort of description, what else can be done? It's up to you to decide. But one thing to consider while writing, think like a novel. But not to the point if its boring.

Intro to Posting
So you want to get into Forum Based Role Playing, but don't exactly know how to represent yourself, or your character in a post. Fear not my friend, for Forgotten690 has come to help you along the dangerous path of Role Playing! =P
Anatomy of a Post
Earlier, you saw a brief segment of how to post by Anima, and if you read that, some of this may be review. A warning however, you should still read through incase there was something you missed, or something new added.
Before you actually begin typing, you must remember what a post is made out of. Here's a handy list to help you out on that.
[li]An action(s)
[/li][li]Speech (not always, but most of the time.)
[/li][li]Lots of detail
[/li][li]Anything else that may help the reader understand your post better.[/li][/ul]
Now that you know the main "stem" of a proper post, you're almost ready to make your first step to a great post. As stated before by Anima, A simple post such as:
*walks around and kills some people*
Will not do at ALL. To start off, you should make sure that all of your post complements the list I gave you earlier. This leads me to my next topic,
Making short posts longer
So you have a main idea of what your character is going to do.
*walks around and kills some people*
Good, that's a start, but in order for it to be a good post, you must follow the list I gave up above. To start off, let's try adding some detail to this post. Basically, detail is just describing something. Detail can consist of a name, adverbs, and more.
Adding Detail
"Oh almighty, and very handsome Forgotten, please tell me what to do next!"
Why sure! I'd be more than happy to my friend. To start off, you need to add a name to everything so that everyone knows what you're talking about. Let's name our character Rayne, and what he's 'killing' can be Lizard Men all while being in Florida. Knowing that, let's add that info to our post.
*Rayne walks around Florida while killing some Lizard Men.*
Adding Description
"But Forgotten, in all his sexiness, I'm still getting mocked about my posts! >___<"
Well DUH! I haven't told you to post yet have you? We're not nearly done yet. But fear not, for I, Forgotten, will have you posting in no time.
Next, we must add some description to our post. This part is fairly easy, yet extremely time consuming. Basically, you just have to describe each and everything out there. This can make
*walks around and kills some people*
Turn into
If you read all of that post, you could see that the whole post was detail and description about thing. Detail in what they did, how they did it, when they did, and the outcome. The main point still stands, but this makes it MUCH more interesting to read, and allows for a more well educated, and good response.
Speech
"Oh Forgotten, I am blessed by your presence, but I must ask this. My character seems deaf, what can I do to fix this?"
Well my friend, it's as simple as adding some speech to your post. This part may not seem very hard at first, but if you do not know your character well, it can be a hellhole. To start, you must know how your character acts. If s/he is a mysterious, depressed person, s/he is less likely to talk, and when s/he does, s/he would most likely talk in short statements. In a nutshell, try and represent your character. Example.
Or
I just added a small blurb there, due to the interest in time. I may or may not fix that later on. Pushing that aside, this brings 'life' to the post, in more ways than one.
Thought
"I feel so small, and so insignificant to your superior abilities Forgotten, but I must ask, is there anything else I must know?"
Why yes, there is one other thing you must learn before we part, and you venture into the immerse world of Forum Based Role Playing. One part we're forgetting here is thinking. Everyone think right? Thought is very easy; it's basically just stating what your character thinks about the situation, a certain character, or anything else. Small example.
Where am I?
Bob had no idea; it was a strange place, lined with pure white steel and strange glowing lights.
Could I be at Forgotten’s house? He would be cool enough to have a pad awesome as this.
Easy stuff there.
Notes to keep in mind
[li] Never Speak for other characters.
You have your own character, NEVER make a post about their reactions to an event. Only the character's owner has the right to do this.
[/li][li] Never God Mod
God mod is the term used when a player over steps their power as a character as in dodging every attack and having every attack landing. Granted, strong characters take the chance of being called God Modders even when there's is perfectly legit. God modding can be prevented with strict player sheets and rules.
[/li][/ul]
Secondly, describing your attacks should not be repetitive. If you’re attempting to get a long and detailed post, then describe the thoughts, movements, and actions of your character to avoid short posts.
Lastly, respect your opponent. Do not claim instant victory with one hit. Often, the better role-player with the most imagination wins.

Rayne walks around the now desolate Florida, his long, deep purple hair bellowing in the wind. He looked around, and seeing as there were claw marks on the hefty tree bark, he concluded that there must be some more Lizard Men here. Hearing the snap of a twig, Rayne spun around in an instant, coming face to face with exactly what he was looking for. The Lizard man in front of his stood about six feet, and covered from head to toe in crimson scales. In it's right hand, he held a large spear with large feathers dangling on a string from the spears head.
The Lizard man stared at Rayne, Trying to determine if he was hostile or not. Rayne however, took no chance to find out. With the speed of the wind, he reached his right hand onto the hilt of his claymore, breaking it free of the straps on his back. As soon as he did that, Rayne jumped back to give himself room, than went into a ready pose with his blade pointed at the Lizard Man. The monster immediately knew this as a threat, and acting as dumb as his ancestors, charged blindly at Rayne, it's spear pointed right at Rayne’s face. With his small bit of foresight, Rayne stepped to the side in order to skillfully dodge his opponent’s attack. Taking advantage of an open strike, Rayne swung his massive blade right at the monsters back. Along with a splatter of blood came the crack of its backbone. With that, the monster fell to the ground, dead.

Or
"OH YEAH!"
*Mike shouted as he scored the last basket, therefore winning his team the basketball game. He had been trying for so long, and so hard to win this, and it had finally happened. Turning to his friend, Cameron, Mike shouted once more.*
"I can't believe we did it man! We Finally won!"
"Dude...stop talking to yourself and get some waffles..."
"Huh?"
*Things started to get blurry, and voices faint as a new image came into view. It was his house. Sitting up and gathering himself together, Mike concluded that it was just a dream. Cameron chimed in, his voice in a semi sarcastic tone.*
"Man, you must have had a rough night last night to be falling asleep and talking to yourself."
- Not everyone uses *'s to mark a set of actions. Some use -'s, and some just have plain text, than use "'s for conversation and the [ I] tag for thoughts.
- Be sure to keep your post on the main topic, and not to stray off.
- I'm thinking of adding how to coordinate your post with others (EX interacting with them) so be sure to keep checking this out.
More lecture...just kidding!
"So...is that all? I mean, I don't want to keep you from all your fans."
Why yes, that is all. Congratulation, you have just passed 5th grade posting. I say 5th grade, because there is oh so much more that could be added, and you all have a lot more to learn. But fear not, for that is why you have friends.

"No, thank you all might Forgotten, your sexiness and greatness has truly helped all who read this, and I'm sure that those few who do not know you, will come to, and love you from this!"
Ah ha ha ha ha, I know. =P

[-Combat Specifics-]
Role-plays involving combat are what I feel, the most common of the competent role-plays. It involves a fight between two forces. I will cover two forms of combat role-play.
Monster Versus Player Combat
Monster Versus Player combat or MVP for short is a term often used in MMORPG's to describe the character fighting non player characters. In this case, we are referring to Non-Player Characters or NPC for short.
Firstly, consider your opponents or opponents. You’ll be fighting. They should fit into the setting around you and the world your in.
Then you must engage into combat.
Combat with NPC's is very simple. Your describe your attack and describe there reaction. It's no different then writing a story.
Examples:The young soldier’s shield buckled and bent from the impact of the Imperials axe causing him to lose balance and begin falling backwards. Without missing a beat the Imperial flipped over his axe and slashed out into the soldier's broken shield. As he followed through on his strike he dragged the helpless solider to the ground.
As you can see, there is no second party involved in the combat. It's very free form, but you should stick within the realms of your character during combat.
Player Versus Player
Player Versus Player or PVP is far more complex then MVP. It involves combat with another role-players character, and has rules tied to it.
