It has been recommended that there be a limit placed on how many alternate versions of a single character someone can post. I feel this would impede creativity, but they believe the recommended 5 would help clear up the pages. I wanted to get others' thoughts on this.

Uhh, who made that suggestion? Seriously. Some characters are just fun to tinker around with. It's like having your own Sliders series! AU characters are very fun to use and create, now, I can understand if there were practically no differences in an AU characters, let's say, he likes vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate (and if that has nothing to do with anything else on his/her/it's character). But AU characters are typically completely different characters of their own. Limiting them just doesn't seem to be a smart move.

Heh ... it was a key difference in that series a while back where the guy was trying to hunt down all the stray demons that had escaped, and Lucifer was always advising him. At one point, another angel, a good one, came, and because he had seen Lucifer first, the angel also looked the same, something about them tending to look like the first one one's seen. Well, he was able to tell the difference between the two because the angel ate Vanilla ice cream and Lucifer ate Rocky Road.

Exactly, but normally such a thing holds no merit. Now, if someone can make an AU character that has that as a major difference, and it genuinely makes him a very different character, I will pin a medal on their chest.

So what should constitute a genuine difference? What's the bare minimum?

Hmm, well, in my opinion, anything that directly affects: Personality (to, quite a bit different or completely flipped), Power (at least a tier, or giving them completely different powers) or history. Is pretty major. There's other stuff too, but those are my three big ones.

How different should the history be?

Well, typically even the smallest intentional change can lead to big differences in almost every other category, so history, while often the biggest part of a AU character, is one of the less important ones in terms of difference. Something as simple as a different love interest can severly change alot about a character. Things like different moral choices, friends and upbringings can have a huge impact on a character. Heck, even being at a different place at a certin time can be big.
