He fanned the question with his hands, "Aw no not at all! Not the water per say...just the change in element is all! Ahahahah..." He cleared his throat and marched up the stairs with Mairsile, when he'd reached the top he gave the water within a hard stare.
"Ladies first, I'll follow you once we're in the water. I'll have limited talking while we're en route, but feel free to keep a conversation! I love listening to things!"
After the declaration, Jack took a deep breath, tied the Charm to this neck, and placed the shell-whistle into his mouth. He looked like he was wavering between jumping in and jumping back, but, suddenly he found his conviction and dove right in with a respectively sloppy splash.

Mairsile nodded in agreement and jumped in first, waiting until after she was in to return her legs to their original single fin. She easily darted ahead of him in the water before realizing she was leaving him trailing, then paused and glanced back. "Hurry up," she encouraged him mouthlessly.

His eyes burned of course at entering the water, but soon enough the Neraid Charm did its work and his vision blended back to the same clarity it had above water. At noticing Marsile's words and realizing she was a good deal ahead of him, he grit his teeth to try speaking while it was still in his mouth.
It took a bit of effort as underwater speech wasn't the Charm's forte, but it worked with passable results.
"Is it alright if I hold onto your hand as we go?" Even if he was reasonably fit, he simply wasn't built to have aquatic speed on par with a mermaid. Regardless it was still embarrassing for him to be, in his mind, asking so much of her.

The girl blinked in confusion, his words coming across mumbled and convoluted through the water. "What?" she asked, tilting her head, unable to understand the blubbering the water made of his words.

He slapped his own head and tried swimming over to her as fast as he could manage. When he was within a reasonable distance he repeated what he said, this time sounding it out more carefully and loudly and with signs.
He pointed to himself and then to her, "Can I," he held onto her hand, "Hold on," he pointed in the direction she had been swimming in previously, "So we can," and moved his hand in a single wavy motion, "Swim faster?"

The girl smiled cheerfully. "Oh!" she answered as she finally figured out what he was saying. "Of course! I guess you know why we don't talk with our mouths now, huh?"
And with that, she grabbed his hand and took off. It was roughly akin to being grabbed by the hand by an Olympic runner and then being told to keep up. In other words, Mairsile dragged the human through the water. There was little swimming on his part to be had. It wasn't long until they were over the area where Ian was being swarmed by the other Tide-Water maidens.
Mairsile scowled irritably. "They're all over down here, too ... I had no idea so many came with us ... Poor guy ..."

The speedy journey was nothing short of an enthralling blur for Jack, when they'd arrived it took him a few moments to realize where they were.
He immediately waved wildly at poor Ian being swarmed by the herd of maids, "Dr. Hackett!"
However he'd forgotten he was still underwater, and the Charm slipped out of his mouth for a jarring instant. He immediately shoved it back into his mouth and repeated his greeting. It performed a little better than the first attempt, but still sounded fairly distorted like the audio of a knockoff CD.

By their nature, Tide Water was not a clan given to confrontation. They much preferred sunbathing and playing games to violent struggles for dominance. But when forced to compete for a chance at claiming a human mate, their good nature could quickly evaporate under the heat of their primal urges which only became more pronounced and exacerbated as the fight for the human ambassador threatened to get out of hand.
Fairin had beaten a path through the crowd to reach Ian and bullied the other clamoring mermaids to release him. Many argued they had already claimed him and Fainin exchanged shoves and slaps with a good number of them until she had him in her safekeeping, albeit surrounded by ring of sore losers. Fairin was the eldest maid present, making her the clear leader in all other circumstances but this. Here she was a rival, and the other maids respect for her only went so far. The youngest had first rights to choosing a male, and Fairin had broken a great taboo by interfering on Mairsile's behalf.
In the surrounding crowd, even her own daughters postured and flexed tails in a show of great discontent and sexual frustration, with both Fairin and Ian staring back at them with steely resolve and nervous insecurity respectively. Flower was with several other stunned onlookers who all watched to see if it would come to blows.
Thankfully, Flower's keen eyes and loud mouth disrupted the showdown. "Jack!" She cried, delightfully surprised to see another of her best human friends in the water with her. The mermaids surrounding Fairin be came immediately confused and curious. Jack, as they had been told by their mothers, was a name common to human males and with wide staring eyes they turned to see Flower speed over to greet both him and Mairsile with glee.
Ian was also taken aback to see the couple. As was Fairin. "Jack?" "Mairsile?"
"Indeed!" Flower shouted, giggling at Mairsile as she coiled her tail around Jack. Once again she was stuck by an intangible pleasure that felt much more... powerful without a diving suit to prevent skin-to-skin contact. Flower's face seemed to go blank, her eye's growing distant and glassy. Ian trudged after Fairin and the other maids, who all recognized the dazed smile that curled Flower's lips.

"Uuuuum ..." Mairsile hummed quickly, trying to come up with a solution to Flower's lost, glazed look, which she knew all too well from seeing it on the faces of her fellow maidens. She brought her hands together and clapped the sea water and her magic between them, the result being akin to a loud firecracker to get the clam-tailed girl's attention.

Flinching at the sudden noise, Flower immediately seemed to come to her senses with an astonished look on her face. She quickly unfurled herself from Jack, blushing a deep pink hue that matched her tail as she tried to hide it with her hands over her still smiling face. The young maiden still wasn't sure of what she was feeling or thinking, but there was still something or other in the back of her mind that reassured and compelled her. This emotion was somehow elusive, yet inescapable, and Flower knew she wanted more of it.
"My, my," Fairin chuckled at Flower as Ian rejoined the group. "It seems your young ward is coming into her own. "So it seems," the doctor added nervously. He had suspected, if not feared, that Flower's behavior might become more... Amorous. But he would never have guessed the change would come so soon, and with such strength.
As he watched her turn to smile at him Ian also began to realize that Flower's new-found sexuality was only a symptom of a much more mysterious phenomena. One which his scientific mind struggled to understand despite his fascination.
"Take note of this one," Fairin told Mairsile. She motioned to Flower who tilted her head curiously. "Hm? Me?" "Indeed," the elder maid told her. "Mairsile, there is much you can learn from her. She's told us she has lived with men since she was a child."
"Yes! That's right," Flower cheered as she eagerly presented herself to Mairsile. "I know all about them! Does that make you want to be my friend? "

"Sure!" Mairsile agreed. "I'm fascinated by everything Men must know! You can tell me all about it! Their culture, their magicks, their songs, their pastimes, their ..." She suddenly stopped her ramblings as she realized her mother was present, and no doubt in the belief that she had entirely missed the point she was trying to get at ...

Flower twirled for joy, rejoicing, but then suddenly stopped when she saw how cross her new friend's mother had become. The pink-painted maid nervously glanced between the two of them, wondering if she had done something wrong. What could it have been? They were just having fun a moment before. But no, it seemed it was Marsile who was somehow at fault since she was the the only target of the steely look in Fairin's cold blue eyes. The disapproving mother crossed her arms over her chest and a hush fell over the rest of the otherwise boisterous maids. They knew what was coming, as did Mairsile.
"Do not disappoint me in front of our guests," She told her quietly, scolding her by using her full and nearly unpronounceable full name. "You have an important duty to fulfill, and you'd do well to follow young Flower's example. Can't you sense she is in estrus?" Indeed the water had become a heady soup of pheromones, but Flower's in particular stood out from the scent created by the other Tide Water maids. All were also keenly aware that Mairsile's was conspicuously absent despite she presence of two strong and healthy human males.
"Um... What is Estrus?" Flower asked innocently, breaking the uncomfortable silence. All the maids giggled at her and Mairsile, the other misfit. Even Fairin had to chuckle a bit. "Something wonderful," she assured her. "You will find that your body has a way of speaking to you," then she added to Mairsile with a surreptitious glance, "If you are willing to listen..."
Ian meanwhile had become lost in thought, and concern for Flower. Did he even need to be concerned? As Fairin had said, she was coming into her own. And he supposed it was only natural and right that she did. Flower had been raised as an orphan in captivity. Like all mermaids she had rapidly grown into sexual maturity bu never seemed to manifest any lustful behaviors. Until now...
Ian began to realize that Flower's sexual awakening might be linked to her return to the wild. Reunited with the natural energies of the ocean, Flower was flourishing and bubbling with new instincts and emotions she had never known. And it showed...

Mairsile dropped her head despondently. "Forgive me, mother ... In all the excitement and the promise of knowledge and discovery ... I just ... I just can't ..." The gasps from all the other maidens filled the water. "I just ... It's not there, mother ... It's not ..."

Jack's first impulse was embarrassed stuttering and trying to escape Flower, but such an uncomfortable thought escaped his mind just as quickly as Flower's ability to think returned to her. He had to resist the urge to hug himself and express how oddly violated he felt from the relatively physically tame contact.
When his mind was more stable, he listened to the exchange between the others. He recalled how Marsile didn't seem all too excited about her family and their actions, and almost how contrary they were according to the reports he'd read. Though by comparison, they were in dire need of updating with more information, hence the expedition, and there was always the mild fact that one didn't have to conform to the "normalcy" of their bloodline to be "normal."
It made sense in his head, why he, probably rudely and abruptly, interrupted the family drama, which, by mermaid tradition was a very big deal.
"Miss Marsile's...uhm, Absolutely Respectable Mother of the Tide-Maidens!" He bowed madly to emphasize and hope it was enough not to turn their relations sour, "I don't mean to sound arrogant, and it isn't at all my place- but I think I can help your daughter!"
It wasn't entirely true, nor entirely false. He'd heard of and dispelled curses that could stem an otherwise normal, he supposed, procedure of life, but deep down he knew it probably wasn't ill-magic that afflicted Marsile. However that possibility wasn't at all a concern of his, it was simply the painful empathy he felt for her and the desire to at least try and alleviate it even if he was probably digging a deeper hole for himself.

"Hush, Mairsile, don't be silly." Fairin had cut off her daughter's half-hearted lament deliberately. Though she had for some time been greatly concerned by her youngest daughter's apparent lack of sexual interest that had at least been a private matter, safely withheld from the common knowledge of the greater clan at large. But if she faltered now, before the human men and her sisters, Mairsile's reputation and social status would suffer a crippling blow. In the promiscuous tradition of the Tide Water clan, no sin was greater than impotence. Mating with a human male in order to bare superior daughters - and thereby contribute greatly to the regrowth of the clan and the species as a whole - was the highest honor any mermaid could aspire to. Failing that, Mairsile would bring shame not only to herself but her entire family. She knew that, and her mother's gaze was a stern reminder.
Mairsile was given a moment's respite from the rather subversive spite of her mother as she turned to smile warmly at the second human, Jack. "I'm sure you could," she told him kindly, whilst secretly admiring his physique. And unlike the other maids she was able to do so without practically tying her tail in a pent up knot. "But I've already chosen a mate for Marsile: Your leader, Ian."
Ian was stunned. "I beg your pardon?" He asked, not quite believing what he had heard. "Yes. For to have my daughter to grow pregnant with your child, it would be a sign of our good will and also of yours. " Fairin replied cordially. "Perhaps if your union proves bountiful, the matriarch herself my wish to lay with you. And if not, she's almost certain to claim one of your crew. We are all very thrilled that you intend peace, but if you are to make good on your promise then you will be expected to sire new daughters to reclaim what our ancestors lost, and to consecrate our new allegiance."
Ian remained silent, his mind stuck on the fear that he might have been caught in an imposable commitment.
