I've been thinking recently about the idea of an actual multiverse. We use the idea constantly throughout the board(AU character for example), but we don't really have any uniform grasp on what it means. This leads to confusion and even arguments over things that could be leveled easily with just and explanation of ideas on a multiversal plotting.
I think that the most simple solution is to all agree(or vote) on an idea for just that. This would raise the overall compatability of time-travelers and dimensional drifters with the rest of the characters created in what I usually refer to as the "assumed universe"
I have an idea for a plot myself, but i'd like to wait to post it until some people read this and it catches a little Airtime with the higher-ups(I suppose they would be called.)
Until then I'll just wait for a response. ~Toriji

What, exactly, are these arguments that have occurred over alternate realities? And why, exactly, do we need this "uniform" definition? We already have one. Alternate universes exist in an infinite number parallel to our own reality, some with very minor differences (someone ordered fries with their whopper, while in another reality, they didn't; the universe is otherwise identical), while others, something major in difference has occurred. There is an alternate reality for every possible outcome of every possible choice.

The arguments are more from my experience on chat Rp sites, and is what I'm actually trying to aviod.
But can you say that everyone agrees with that? Some may have a different idea and take it into thought over what you feel is right. It's nothing too important, I just think it would be beneficial to bring it up to the light. Even if nothing changes fundamentally, I'm looking for a general understaning from the masses.

It is fundamentally impossible to set a multiversal standard, given that the very definition of the multiverse represents infinitely varied parallel realities.
My advice? Cross that bridge when we get there. Until then, I'm moving this to Suggestions.

I think the general populace of EAB is too intellectual ( ) to fall prey to the find of petty things general rp chat sites do. >.>

Yay, we're smart! But yeah, man. There's no regulating that stuff. I, personally, own the Mellowverse, and in the distant future it turns into psychedelic cotton candy clouds and rainbows and everyone's hiiigh, and made in a Willy Wonka-type factory, which was the setting for Spirals of the Mad Goddess, and a versus RP between Jeff and Epic True, which Ninmast still needs to fix his reply to. In an airport! On the back of a FLYING WHALE. That's my universe. But out of curiosity, just what did you have in mind? A set pantheon?

Well actually, it was concerning the dimensional travelers. My own idea was that of a wheel like organization. A single, variable Earth in the middle with all of the overlapping universes sprouting outward from there. I only use this in my own thoughts because of the fact that we all generally include Earth in each universe[naturally because we live here]. It's not any better than any other idea, I'll be the first to admit, but this is just how i oganize the multiverse in my own thoughts.

The multiverse is more like a family tree than a wheel. You take the oldest relative as far back as you can trace (the original Choice), then that has offspring (each possible outcome of that choice) which in turn have offspring (each possible outcome of their choices), on and on and on and on to present day, or whenever happens to be applicable. You can't even visit one without creating more offspring, one for each world you didn't visit, one for every possible outcome of every possible visit, and one where you didn't go at all. Even the last would have multiple versions to reflect whatever reasons you didn't go.
So I suppose technically, the number of parallel worlds isn't "infinite," as there are certainly a finite number of combinations possible. They've simply long since been beyond our ability to comprehend in multitude.

***DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING, because it's just True talking about things she half-pondered on like once. And it's like, off-topic. You've been warned!***
Mathematically, I guess, that would be how it worked, but I don't believe whatever anti-space all of these universes are stored in has enough anti-space for all the space. It'd be like saving a picture for every pixel that was altered. You could do that, but I think you'd run out of space really fast if it's a big, fancy picture, and we're talking bajillions of entire universes. So, if you do have more than one copy of that picture on hand, there's probably gonna be some pretty significant changes, but not every change you could possibly have made.
I mean, how many times has something ugly happened IRL, and so many different things fall into place because of it, and you look back and go, "Gosh... I don't think it could have happened any other way." I mean, you wouldn't have made a different decision, with the exact same circumstances, the exact same chemicals pumping in your blood, the same barometric pressure that day, and neither would anybody else. There can be no other alternate dimensions, because no other choice can ever have been made. Like, I really regret not going to go and see Coheed and Cambria at the White Rabbit downtown last year (stupid, STUPID!), but at the time, my dad had me convinced that the White Rabbit is this horrible scary place full of bad people, and C&C'll be back, right?
WRONG. YOU CAN'T GET TICKETS FOR SLIPKNOT. YOU CAN'T GET TICKETS FOR THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS FESTIVAL.
Despite that, the alternate dimensions we deal with are imaginary and partial, and that's why they exist, is because they're incomplete, and if you go back far enough, you're going to run out of explanations and your universe falls flat. But we don't go back that far, thank you.
In conclusion, the only universes in the multiverse are the ones that someone, somewhere in the world, remembers. When it's forgotten, that universe ceases to exist, and all the characters are dead, because it's all imaginary.
I decided all that while I was wallowing in remorse over not going to go see Coheed and Cambria. Typing up there. I'm a multitasker...

Ah, but what if your father thought the White Rabbit was a different kind of place, or of C&C was being held at a different place, or if your family happened to be wealthy instead of middle-class?
Or what if Coheed and Cambria didn't exist at all?
Someone, somewhere, made a choice that eventually affected each of these things. But what if they made a different choice? This is the fundamental core of multiversal theory. Even minor choices can eventually make seemingly drastic differences.

And that last sentence leads into the butterfly theory which deals with time travel. And as much as I like talking about those things in person, I feel like it would take forever in a forum.
But this is what I wanted from this thread. So as far as my goals are considered, mission accomplished

Yes, the Butterfly Effect is like multiversal theory, but it deals specifically with time travel and the effect of an act on a single universe, while multiversal theory focuses on actions as they occur across the multiverse.

This is true but I was comparing the butterfly to the choices. Each one, no matter how small, could affect that universe in a major way.

As true as that is, I think what you're trying to do is put all those butterflies in one net rather than let them fly free. 8\
