The place was so crowded, Usagi mused as she wandered amidst the people. It surely must have been an unusual number for the town, itself, being a relatively small one from what her parents had told her. And then there were the odd people, like the girl dancing with a Ludicolo over by the band. It was probably best that way, as she had seen the pokemon try to dance with other passersby, including a band member, an old woman and a woman in a lab coat.
The girl jostled for a better position to see the stand where the announcement before the big event would be taking place, then stopped to take her sweatshirt coat off and tie it about her waist to allow her to be cooler than its heat had permitted.
The dancing girl, unbeknownst to Usagi, was named Melon, and the Ludicolo, unbeknownst to many, was her own, and she was greatly enjoying dancing with it, though such was a loose term, and really, they were just stomping around, halfway attentive to the beat of the music playing through the speakers. Despite her appearance, she was a member of the Elite Four, and had come to the occasion to help with preparations and to bring pokemon in for the event. That all done, all that was left was to enjoy herself, and that was something she was very good at.
Up on stage, Professor Eriadne Pine stepped up to the microphone after adjusting her clothes slightly. Despite the typical image of a pokemon professor, she was neither old nor a man. All the same, she cut a distinguished figure in her red blouse and labcoat and had a gaze that suggested a lack of wisdom in those who questioned her qualifications.
Still, the turnout was more than she had expected. People had come from as far away as Kanto according to the application forms, almost entirely children eager for their first partner. She smiled at the sea of faces and cleared her throat next to the microphone to gather their attention.
"Attention," she called. "Can I have your attention, please?" As things settled down, she nodded in appreciation. "Thank you all for coming." She motioned to the cloudless, sunny sky and gentle sea breeze. "And how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful day for this ceremony! Many of you are eager to meet your first hopefully lifetime partner, so I'll try not to keep you waiting very long. Please stay with your partner at all times and don't go beyond the boundaries we've outlined for you. The pokemon beyond are wild and can be dangerous. You'll each be given a single pokeball, so make sure you choose your first encounter carefully. When both you and your partner have finished, come back to town and we'll be able to celebrate with the big pot luck over your very first pokemon!" At the end, she threw her arms up into the air as she finished the announcement with energy, hoping to start things off with exuberance for all involved.
