"You're really nice, Jenny!" she responded cheerfully, her entire countenance suggesting that the mix-up in names was not a deliberate slight, but a real confusion on her part. She turned back toward the interior of the van as she kept shaking his hand. "Isn't he nice, Enji?"
Enji poked her head over closer to the door so she was easier to see. While she definitely held the beauty of the others, she wore no makeup (Haruka wore glitter on her cheeks and it was doubtful her pink and yellow pigtails were natural in color) and dressed very plainly. It was a natural beauty she had, though she looked maybe a year or two younger than the more childish Haruka. She looked, aside from being a knock-out, like the girl you'd meet next door. She looked Jerry over politely - not lewdly, but merely taking in his details - before patting the girl on the head. "Everyone's nice to you, sister. Just like they're nice to baby animals and little kids."
The friendly jest, if Haruka took it in at all, didn't seem to faze the girl any. "Yeah, but he's way better looking than most, don't you think?"
"Haruka!" Enji scolded, but the girl would not be dissuaded once the torrent of words started flowing from her mouth.
"Not like that big, fat guy that was following us everywhere at the restaurant!"
"Haruka ..."
"He was a real creep! And sweaty, too!"
"Haruka?"
"And he wanted to show me something out in his car! He made it sound like it was something nice, like candy, but it was some kind of kindergarden uniform he wanted me to wear!"
"Haruka."
"I think he might have been a real pedo-bear!"
Finally, Enji took a deep breath and, after giving an apologetic glance to Jerry, shouted uncharacteristically loudly, "HARUKA!!!"
The pigtailed girl let out a yelp and jumped a bit, then glanced back and covered her ear. "Oww, Enji, you didn't have to shout like that ..."
The younger sister glanced flatly back at her. "If I believed that, I wouldn't have."

People had a habit of telling Jerry he was a bad judge of character. Now, of course he didn't think so. And with the day he'd been having of course he would be proven wrong. Lady Luck, it seemed, was on the rag...
Haruka may have known how to speak English (or Engrish) but that didn't prove she was very bright. And she certainly wasn't. Not by a long shot. Haruka, the air-head, launched into a tangent of high-speed babbling that seemed to go on and on forever. Untill it came to a sudden, ear-splitting stop. Jerry felt just as stunned by Enji's outburst as Haruka was, but also grateful for the quiet peace that followed. And Enji, despite her Plain Jane appearance, was a still a real looker. She and Haruka could have been models. Jerry observed that the same was true of the bespectacled girl in the front seat as well. And especially the dark-haired lady at the wheel.
Jerry realized he had nearly been run over by the Japanese Babe-mobile.
Neither of the two older looking girls seemed all that surprised or bothered by the drama in the back seat. As if it were something they had lived with every day. And maybe they did. Aside from their amazing bodies, Jerry could perceive subtle similarities between the girls that seemed to hint at a family resemblance. I'll just bet...
"Say," he ventured. "You girls aren't sisters are you?"
What was he thinking? It was a gamble. A very serious gamble on a day Jerry shouldn't have been trying to push his luck. Either he would impress these beauties with some clever, off-handed detective work, or he'd be proven wrong (again) and look like a complete dork. He was betting a reputation he didn't have after only one day at a new school. These girls didn't wear school uniforms, but if they really were students -- the prettiest and most popular -- then that could mean they had the connections ruin Jerry's life if they willed it so. It had happened before to him before. And he knew it could happen again.

"Yup!" Haruka beamed, nodding and sending her pigtails bobbing - as well as a couple other things that she seemed to not notice. "The four of us are all sisters! We work for Sonra's family!"

Score. Jerry was thrilled but also confused all at once. He'd won his gamble and dodged what turned out to be an imaginary bullet, but once again his strangest of days had completely thrown him for a loop by way of Haruka's little declaration. At least her bouncing was enough of a distraction to soften the impact. Mind-blowing news wasn't so mind-blowing when the mind was elsewhere.
Jerry's came back to him as Sonra was drawing near, bringing the vibe with her. Or so he thought. One moment they were both there and the next the vibe was suddenly gone. Jerry's perception had just made another hard left turn. He did a double take from Sonra to Haruka, trying to keep himself together. "Ah... I'm sorry? You work for...?"

"Sonra's family!" she repeated happily.
"My mother, more specifically," Sonra provided as she approached behind him, though this time, she tried to avoid actively following him to see if that was what was bothering him, so the vibe was nowhere to be felt. "She is a ... it might be most accurate to call her a socio-historian."

"A what?" Jerry knew what she meant. Her mom was one of those professional academic types that where not hard to find in a country as devoted to higher education as Japan. What had stumped Jerry was trying to figure how and why a quartet of beautiful girls would be working for a historian of all things. Were they family friends? Or was the pay good enough to keep them from finding a way to put their looks to better use. Again, Jerry could see any one of them posing in a bikini on the cover of any of the gravure idol magazines he'd seen displayed at newsstands all across town. Sonra included.
Dosn't make much sense, Jerry thought. But after a day like this, what does?
It was just too weird, but he went along with it. Roll with the punches. "Ah okay. Right on, right on," he said chuckling and nodding. "That's so cool, I had no idea." He searched for something to keep the ball rolling on his little act. His words fell on one another like dominoes and he felt himself getting comfortable. He was in the zone now, speaking the charmer's rhetoric. "Fantastic. So, then it's no wonder you have the top grades. I saw them posted. Making mom proud, huh? I'm the same way with my dad back home."

Finally, the bespectacled, blue-haired beauty seemed to take an interest. She turned her head from the large book she was reading whose title was hidden by the angle to look across at him. "You get good grades, too, do you?" she asked, apparently seeking out how good.

Jerry gave a respectful not to the sexy bookworm. "I sure do try. My old man's an attorney, after all. And besides that, I had enough problems just being 'the rich kid' without being 'the dumb rich' kid too." Jerry chuckled proudly, remembering struggles with high school politics. "I was never very good at English, if you can believe that, but I studied hard to make up for it and I got a three point... six, I think? Yeah, a 3.6 GPA before I jumped on the plane and came over here."

"Impressive," she answered, but her soft lips curled up in a smirk. "I graduated with a perfect 4.0. Ten years early. What does that make you feel, Jerry?"

Jerry smirked, taking the passive-aggressive jibe in stride. She was testing him. As girls often did. So if Miss Academia wanted to lock horns over grade point averages, then maybe Jerry liked her enough to indulge her.
Smiling, he briefly glanced up at the sky as if he was more interested in the clouds. "Heh, well, it makes me think maybe I should have spent more time studying and less time painting," he admitted. Then he met the girls eyes. Like Haruka's they seemed to hold onto him, but Jerry was unfazed for the moment. His words might have been chipper and up beat, but his own gaze had noticeably hardened.
"Still, I'm very happy that I chose not to. I am an artist." Jerry paused, both for effect and for time to recall the right words. "When I examine myself and my methods of thought I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge." If the girl was as smart as she was boasting, then the girl would know Jerry was quoting Einstein. The man who's face was actually printed on the black T-shirt he wore under his school uniform.

The young woman got a wistful look about her face as she reflected on the statement. "Ah, Einstein ... Now there was a man without equal. Do you know what "fantasy" he was referring to?" she asked him. "I'll give you a hint. It was related to his constant bed-hair."

"What? You mean dreaming?" Jerry scowled for a moment, still unsure of what the girl was getting at. He put his smile back on and shrugged. "Well, he was a dreamer. I mean, not just literally speaking. Because everybody has regular dreams, right?"

"Oh, his dreams were -anything- but regular," she explained as she pushed up her glasses like one countering a point. "It's said he met a woman when he was younger, very intelligent. But she was only interested in equally intelligent men. The rumor claims that is the reason for his scientific drive. He was pushing himself to measure up to her expectations. Every night, he'd see her in his dreams, and every night, despite his work, she was always a bit more ahead of him, but she'd reward him a little at a time for each step forward he made."

"I hadn't heard of that," Jerry quietly admitted through his fake smile. He could sense he was losing control of the conversation, and he was headed the right way to looking like an idiot. This sister was smarter than him, and deep down, something about that unsettled him. Time to quite while he was ahead.
Turning to leave for the second time, he said to Sonra, "Hey, I've still got to get back to my place and take care of that fish tank. But I'll see you girls some other time and we can talk more then, alright? Great meeting you all... Sayonara." With that, the American boy waved to the girls over his shoulder and hurried off towards the metro station, trying to find an end to the day's weirdness.

"How rude," the eldest girl, the driver, said as he left. "He never even answered your question, Ayako."
