"I'd say you've got it in spades," Jerry commended, hoping the meaning of the American saying would carry over as he finished his rolls and put the final touches to his sketch of Enji's beautiful figure standing against the backdrop of the nightly city. He had drawn her to such detail that she seemed to be staring out of the scene, pulling in the observer with her powerfully enchanting gaze. Glancing up at his model, though, Jerry could tell his portrayal was no where close to the real thing.
He sighed, feeling resigned and encouraged that probably no artist could ever do her justice. "I had a great time with you tonight," he said as he stood and offered Enji a hand up. "But it's getting pretty late. I just got my body clock back where it should be and I don't want to start falling asleep in class again. We should go out another time, too."

"Sure," she accepted the hand up. "I know a few other sights that should pique your artistic interest." She moved about to gather the things they'd left, slipping empty containers back into bags, but paused as a thought occurred to her. "Oh, hey ... A question ... Do you have a dog?"

"Hm? Yeah, actually. Well... Not any more though," Jerry looked away towards the cityscape, rubbing the anxiously rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "His name was Boomer. A big old English bulldog. He never liked strangers very much but he was my only dog. And we was a good dog. It's funny... He's been gone for years but I still have dreams about him sometimes." Jerry chuckled. "And he's still the same old Boomer. Loves me and hates everyone else."

Enji smiled in understanding. "You must miss him very much. Ever wish you had him back?"

"All the time," Jerry said wistfully. And he remembered what Sonra had told him - that Boomer's benevolent spirit might still be with him in some form. It was an encouraging thought. He looked up to gaze at Enji with a grateful air. "You have a good night, okay?"

"Can you find your way back alright in the dark?" she asked with concern. "I mean, I have to walk back as far as the store, anyway."

"Yeah, I can make it," Jerry assured her. Then he considered, "What about you, though? I'm sorry, I'm stupid. Let's hike down together." He chuckled nervously. "I must be getting tired."

But she just chuckled. That seemed to be Enji. Always understanding, always forgiving. "It's okay. No need to apologize."

"Thanks," he said, gazing at her dreamily. Enji really did prove to be the highlight of Jerry's first Japanese weekend. After they had said their little goodbyes in the market parking lot, the American boy settled back into his regular routine with nothing very special to do. Other than painting of course. Saturday and Sunday came and went as Jerry worked intermittently at finishing his tribute to Enji's lovely smile in the garage. Jerry always painted with music to help keep him focused. And since he also always worked with the garage door open, Mr. Fukaida's well-to-do neighbors were forced to tolerate American rock music.
Monday. The final bell rang and Jerry sat at his desk with a bored sigh. His painting still wasn't finished, and he knew he had a long day of school to get though before he could be reunited with his brush. He was a suffering artist...

Sonra came in with her books in her pink backpack and paused at Jerry's table. "Wow, Jerry," she said in way of greeting, "you look like someone up and died. Is everything okay?"

"Just wish I were somewhere else," Jerry pointed out. "It's no big deal," he sighed, turning to give Sonra his full attention. His face seemed to lighten up when he looked at her. "Hey, remind me real quick, was that math exam today or Tuesday?"

"Tuesday," she clarified. "Of next week. Why, are you nervous? I know a great math tutor if you think you need one."

"Next week?" The boy was simultaneously relieved and embarrassed for having been so mixed up. Jerry scoffed, "I'm not nervous I'm just..." He dropped the air of confidence he was trying to put on, sighing. "I'm just not feeling up to it right now. Usually I'm pretty good when it comes to math, but that doesn't mean I like it... You said you knew a tutor?" Jerry was quick to add, "I just feel like I could use a refresher course, you know?"

The girl smiled sunnily. "Don't worry, I understand perfectly. You can never be too prepared! I'll give her your name. You'll like her."

"Yeah?" Jerry wondered who it might have been but didn't ask. A pleasant surprise would be nice, he thought. "Thanks for the set up, Sonra," the American boy said appreciatively. "I hadn't planned on waiting around very long after school, but I'll wait up for your girl."
