Name: Gnathos, the Ever-Gnawing
Age: Adult, Actual Age Unknown
Gender: Male
Race: Man-Beaver
Power Level: 3
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Timeline: Medieval
Appearance: Bucktoothed and full of inner tension. Hunched on all fours and covered in dark brown fur that reeks of an oily musk. Barely existent ears are sharp nonetheless, and a scaly, paddle-like tail drags along behind him; broad as a banquet plate, and black as the abyssal madness in his beady eyes. Tough, leathery webbing between his fingers keeps his hands curled into a pair of clawed scoops that tremble if kept idle for too long. The candied-orange incisors of Gnathos are like chisels constantly chattering with nervous energy and dicing whimpered curses.
Personality: Insane and utterly restless, he is a pale shadow of the man he once was. Instinct drives him above any thought or feeling. Seemingly devoid of kindness and cruelty alike, he is consumed by the need to chew and to upkeep his burgeoning dam. The sound of running water stirs him to frenzy. In his madness, Gnathos sometimes screams at the silent stillness of his pond, but rarely has he been known to speak. Although, folktales cite him as chanting “Damn it, dam it! Damn it, dam it! Damn it, dam it!”
History: Gnathos is a local legend among the men and elves of the Candle Buck Forest. Few claim to have seen him, or know someone who has. More claim to have only heard his far off screaming while most children believe Gnathos leaves coins in the shoes of sleeping boys and girls who have finished their daily chores.
Myriad are the stories surrounding Candle Buck’s mysterious beaver man, but a common thread between tellings hold that he had once been an adventurer who had run afoul of the nature goddess, Busan. As punishment for one crime or another, she damned him to eternal life as a beaver, always busy and unable to rest. None know the location of his pond. Indeed, anyone who does not wish to be found is said to be, “Having tea with Gnathos.”
Powers: Bar fights have broken out over whether or not Gnathos can fly, or turn wood to gold. However, more realistic estimates of the creature’s abilities postulate that, as a beaver or beaver-like creature, Gnathos ought to be swift and stealthy in water, while clumsy on land. True beavers have been known to bite off the fingers of unwary fur trappers, so it stands to reason that the bite of Gnathos may be just as fearsome, with keenly alert senses as well.
Weakness: If Gnathos exists, and his immortality vested only in folklore, it seems unlikely that he would be any more impervious to harm than beaver or man. Even if the opposite were true, immortality is no boon if it must be spent as an insane and deformed monster.
