Name: Polaris
Age: N/A, appears to be petite mid-teens
Gender: Female
Race: Edenite - Class S Purifier Unit
Alignment: Lawful Good
Power Level: High-Tier High (9)
Timeline: Modern/Futuristic
Appearance: Polaris is a small-framed girl with extremely pale skin, vividly yellow eyes and long, mother-of-pearl hair that hangs to the back of her knees, courtesy of the Varangians her genetic data is drawn from. For daily wear, she has a great love of sundresses, and pairs them with mary janes or sandals, sleeveless half-jackets and waist belts or sashes. She has a great adoration for hair accessories and can often be found wearing a different one on each different occasion one finds her in. She is usually accompanied by two drones, which she treats like pets, patting them and talking to them despite the fact that they are completely nonautonomous. One is white, the other is black, and each is roughly the diameter of a basketball. They are flat on the underside and concave on the other and their domes are shaped like lotus flowers. However, she does not have to have them travel with her, and can simply materialize them at her sides when she activates her combat armor.
Her combat armor possesses three distinct layers on her body, first a pitch black leotard that goes up to and around her neck and thigh-high leggings, then black metal armor with a high finish in the form of a short-skirted black dress and thigh-high boots, and finally a full-sleeved half-coat. The leotard extends down her arms under the jacket and over the back of her hands and fingers, but her palms and the undersides of her fingers are pale and bare. In this form, she also possesses an armored trident crown and black malmetal wings from her back that are lined with electric blue energy circuitry over a black metal frame.
Personality: Polaris possesses a personality that, on the surface, is extremely easy-going and cooperative, with a good, honest nature. She can patiently wait for what she desires without mind for distractions or delays. She even seems to enjoy them, certain that she will reach her destination in due course, though she doesn't go out of her way to seek such detours. Behind this very casual demeanor, however, is the reason why she so easily goes with the flow. She is extremely confident in "facts" as she knows them, and while she won't flaunt them intending to negatively affect the emotions of another, she does have a marked tendency to bluntly state them when the case to do so arises. She drops these with all the subtlety of a bomb, but appears genuinely confused when that offends someone. It simply is, and stating such was the most adequate answer to whatever was being discussed. She would unflinchingly note her own shortcomings as easily as she would her superiorities, and has trouble understanding why this blunt honesty isn't both shared and appreciated by more people around her.
History: For hundreds of thousands of years, Eden made a habit of checking in on its pet project - the Carbons of Earth, self-named Humans - every few hundred years or so. Their rate of development was relatively slow, and to the hyper-advanced and more or less eternal Edenites, this seemed wholly sufficient. Barring automated detections of major anomalies, they would more or less leave it at this and let humanity have its own devices.
In the time since the last live examination, however, humanity, it seemed, had reached a point of critical progression and passed through it without Eden noticing. When systems finally triggered, they found an unfathomable population boom across the entire globe, followed by the rapid development of extinction-level capacity. But technology could be controlled, people that would be less prone to misuse it could be shuffled into positions to blockade it. Sure, these "nukes" and similarly destructive developments in all sorts of fields were bad, but Eden had ready and polished solutions for them. Far worse was a problem they had never even imagined.
The rise of superhumans.
Theorized to be the result of early genetic coding that had been too minor to be initially detected until they compounded over time into radical deviations, these "metacarbons," as Eden christened them, were an entirely new and terrifying monstrosity in their carefully-pruned dream for humanity. You could change the person in charge of a nuke, but when the person was the nuke, you were stuck with whatever mercurial nature the individual carbon possessed, leading to untold damages and loss of life as many used their abilities irresponsibly. That many had honed their abilities defending against threats both foreign and domestic to the planet further complicated the issue; they could not simply neutralize all current metacarbons without leaving humanity defenseless and at the mercies of threats they had only barely been enduring.
Carbons, the last and most beloved children of the Master and Eden's most sacred charge, had come to teeter on the brink of annihilation without the Edenites noticing, and Eden responded in the most natural way anyone could possibly expect of them.
They panicked.
Treating the carbons like the metaphorical children they viewed them as, they began with the most rational first step they could come up with and sought to take away all of the sharp objects from the toddlers. They gathered major figures among those with the biggest and sharpest and began tests and analyses to figure out how they got hold of them in the first place. It goes without saying that this went poorly. Not only did it reveal their hand far too early, their underestimation of the Carbon stubbornness left far too much of their technological data in Carbon hands and they were caught so off-guard that, instead of cowing the second collection wave with the might at their disposal, they had hardened their captives and critically undermined their own position of authority.
Now viewed firmly as hostile enemies by the children they sought to protect, they were forced to progress into the second phase acting the part. The data gathered from the metacarbons had been intended from the start to create replacements, immortal sentinels of immense power themed as upgrades to the retired Carbon guardians, but fully loyal to Eden's mission to preserve and protect humanity without ever suffering the temptation to abuse their powers. But regrettably, because of Eden's initial folly, their first mission in defense of what should have been their most precious obsession would be the assassination of their own predecessors.
Powers: As a Class S Purifier, Polaris possesses extremely superhuman physical and mental abilities, including extremely heightened strength, durability, speed, reaction time and cognitive intelligence. Like all Edenites, she also has an internal ansible that allows her near-instant access to the entirety of the networked minds of Eden for functional communication across most of the galaxy, as well as the immense caches of knowledge compiled in Eden's digital libraries. Rather than being an exhaustive list of racial abilities or abilities inherent to her class, consider this list to address where she markedly differs.
Flight - Contrary to appearances, she does not actually use her wings for propulsion in flight. Though her form has already been designed prioritizing lighter weight for better flight, her wingspan alone would still be insufficient to physically provide the necessary lift. Instead, plasma microthrusters under the wings and on her ankles provide the energy, while the wings aid in stability and maneuvering, though they can provide sudden gusts for sharp alterations in course once she is already in flight. She is capable of reaching speeds many times beyond high-supersonic ratings, using barriers to deal with the issue of thermal control resulting from it. She is essentially untrackable by anti-air and antiballistic countermeasures due to her small size and this immense airspeed. Because she is not a human, the g-forces involved in this are irrelevant to her.
Barrier Generation - This would commonly be considered her signature ability. Polaris can manipulate energy fields to form nearly impenetrable barriers, usually used to encapsulate a target, but also as linked funnel points for the dispersal of plasma energy. Some of her highest speeds are reached by supplementing her physical thrusters in this way, making her maximum speed in theory limited only by her own energy reserves, her capacity to control it and the hard boundaries of physics. It also serves as her primary method of attack, as her frame has no physically mounted weaponry. While powerful, the size of the fields she can manipulate is limited. On her own, she can comfortably enclose a large male human in a bubble large enough that he could hang in the middle and not touch any point of the boundary. The primary purpose of her drones is to extend this range, and with them, her range grows exponentially. She can also surround herself with a barrier. This greatly limits what other actions she can take, but while it is active, it renders her very nearly indestructible. As an extension of her ability to manipulate energy fields, she can also siphon energy delivered against her barrier when enveloping herself into a klein bottle matrix and temporarily store it there, ideally releasing it in a retaliatory strike. Energy siphoned into the matrix does not count against the durability of the shield, but because she is essentially restraining that energy within a retaining reservoir, there is a hard limit on just how much she can absorb before she either has to vent it or it breaches with devastating consequences.
Energy Projection - As mentioned above, she can relay energy through her field matrix to release energy depending on the shape of the field. This can be immensely flexible, forming thrust, blasts or even nearly intangible waves of emitted energy. On her own, she is limited to plasma energy, but with her drones, she can also unleash streams of electrons or positrons, or merge the streams to unleash unfathomably deadly gamma radiation, commonly used to eradicate any organic matter within a barrier when necessary.
Anomalous Material Composite Subsystem - The Varangians barely survived a centuries-long battle against a devastating but woefully understood parasitic plague before finding their way across parallel realities to this Earth. Particularly the one used as a basis for Polaris had a significant portion of this material creatively used as both camouflage against the parasite and as an unforeseen basis for her own anomalous abilities. Recognizing through records and other data sources just how dangerous this material could be if it broke out in this Earth, Polaris was fitted with similar countermeasures. With an inert form of the plague suffused throughout her form, she possesses a natural resistance to the plague and would be overlooked in the event of an attack if she didn't draw attention to herself. However, her sensors are also tuned toward it with an extreme sensitivity, and are abnormally sensitive to almost all other contaminants. She can accurately detect even invisible, microscopic clouds of contaminants, envelop them in a barrier and utilize gamma radiation and other energy forms to completely sanitize the space within the barrier without any risk of escape.
Equipment: Due to time constraints, the initial generation of Class S Purifiers designed in response to the metacarbon threat were launched notoriously underequipped, often with minimal testing and sometimes lacking whole armaments and systems with the expectation that they would adapt or find suitable short-term substitutions in the field. Some theorize that this rushed release was key to explaining their initial failure. Whether Polaris was planned with additional equipment is unclear, but if so, she never received it or it was deemed unnecessary.
Beyond her S-Grade combat armor, she has only her twin drones, each of which are effectively additional plasma generators with field projectors on their undersides, but their generators would be ludicrously oversized if their purpose was this alone. The white drone constantly produces a store of positrons, while the black one stores a proportional charge of electrons. Effectively, they store antimatter and matter respectively in an energy state. Either one can be utilized by Polaris independently, or simultaneously to initiate controlled pair annihilation, releasing tremendous amounts of energy for offensive or sanitation purposes. Though normally kept at safe distances from one another, in times of great need, she can link them together into a single unit, allowing their stores to mingle at nearly their full rate and turning the two drones into a single, incredibly powerful particle beam cannon.
Weakness: Though a Class S Unit, her design focused on keeping her small and light for better flight, and she consequently has much lower mass than is typical of a Purifier Unit of her classification, as well as less physical strength. This means that she could easily be batted around in melee by a more powerful combatant, which would be very easy to find at their power level. Though she can use her own barriers defensively to help mitigate this, her ability to form additional barriers - and thus fight back - is greatly limited while doing so.
Without her drones, her abilities with her barriers are extremely limited, and they are also briefly out of commission after she utilizes them in their combined state.
She was built for her role, not raised into it, so Polaris lacks much in the way of naturally occurring experiences of someone who had a childhood, which can affect her capacity in social situations.
