Okay, well, I'm turning 18 in a few months. I figured a safe way to spend some money on my 18th birthday (instead of going to a strip club, like a few friends joked) is to buy a sniper rifle. It's for... personal... reasons (no, I won't use it to kill maliciously... it's more for protection from things)...
I'm attempting to get a licence and other stuff to own a gun. All I need help with is figuring out what kind of model to get.
A friend of mine suggested I get this one Russian model that appeared in the movie "Enemy at the Gates". It's supposed to be cheap and accurate (though the recoil's horrible) or something.
I'm willing to put out, maximum, of about $150-$200. Any suggestions?
Also, if there are any cheap AK semi's, suggestions would be nice.
Also, any handguns (preferrably something that doesn't involve "9mm" in it's description) would be nice.

Dude... they are not called sniper rifles. Just rifles. You call them sniper rifles and the dealer may not sell them to you. I don't know the laws around you, but to my knowlege you have to be 21 to buy a handgun. Also, I don't know the cost of any guns other than $200 most likely will not be enough to get anything good. It all depends on what your going for? If your buying a rifle for home defense, your better off with a .38 lever action rifle. Easy to fire, no risk of the bullets going into the house next door, can be fired fast once you get use to it, and quite accurate. Also buying a rifle with a scope is going to cost you more.
But really, why the hell do you need a rifle? Are bears suddenly showing up in your backyard or something?

Well, I'm moving out to the country... probably the nearest neighbor might be a mile away. I'm getting a deer-hunting licence this weekend, actually... although I'll only be able to use a bow.
It's for a couple things. Mainly the groundhogs that are terrorizing the garden in the area, but also just in case the government goes south... and starts taking away more constitutional rights and stuff (things have seemed to take a turn for the worse lately, from what I've been hearing), and I want to make sure that when it comes time for revolution, I have a weapon.

I don't see why a bow wouldn't work. Out in the country, if you're smart, nothing can really suprise you. The range on a good bow is enough to take down a lot of things. It takes a little more time to master a bow than a gun, but in the long run I'd prefer to get a good bow in this situation, especially since that's all you'll be able to use at first.

Bows are actually sweet. I have a bow (Cross bow at that) that has some pretty good distance on her, with some sweet momentum. The arrow heads these days are great.
I have some that when they apply pressure on the tip and three prongs spring out form the sides to latch on. Kinda like a grapple gun! =D

I recently got an air rifle, its got 1250 fps and a nice scope, i forget the rating on it, but its a freaking sweet gun, i still dont know the maximum range but it packs a helluva punch. This not being airsoft gun i havent shot it anyone but the objects ive shot have either bee sent back flying or the round passed through so fast the object didnt move and i couldnt tell if i had hit it until i inspected it

It's also very innaccurate :S
Surely you can get a regular .22 or .38?
BTW, if the goverment goes sour I think a long term bomb shelter would be of better use than a rifle

actually i got the scope locked in and its very accurate, as for getting a real gun their just a bit over my spending budget, and i'd like to see a bomb shelter fit in the areas in california

oh, if he's planning to go the back country it shouldn't be too hard. Of course it's probably not in his price range though. Maybe if he has a basement he can try to convert it. xD
But I had an air rifle with a good scope, but whenever there was any wind at all it would just not go where it was supposed to. Maybe mine was less powerful. Doesn't matter, I use my grandfather's old .22 now, and I <3 it.

well when theres wind you adjust the gauge on the scope to compensate
