Me and my family just got upgraded to full-out cable broad-band via Time Warner. Now, we need a good, new anti-virus software to go with it, as our Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition has been failing to provide real-time protection for some time now. I've heard Symantec sucks, and I aggree. What do you guys think? What would you suggest? Note, my dad is now some-what willing time buy non-free anit-virus software.

Well I've got the free edition of AVG, and it's never messed up yet. Here's their site. They can tell you more than I can since I have no clue how half of this stuff works. =P free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

I use McAfee. It works, I like it, though it frustratingly picky at times...you have to pretty much tell it exactly what you want done, which can be good to the paranoid user, but you can also set it to not be so picky...
*shrugs* Say what you want about McAfee, but it eliminated that WinFixer crap that nothing else seemed to get rid of...WinFixer. Legendary, yo.

I'm a big fan of AVG, too. It's perhaps the best free antivirus software out there.

Heh, yup. There is a paid version, but all you really get extra is a couple extra buttons. The free version is unlimited. You never run out of time where it just says, unless you wanna start chunking out money now, you're on your own. It still actively scans incoming things for viruses and still does its full scan.

i started using mcafee, since norton is just plain bad, its what SBC uses on their corporate stuff, and just remember with the free stuff you get what you paid for

You're mistaken. AVG is superior to Norton and McAfee.

I have spyware blaster and spybot search and destory. But ever since I downloaded the latest verions of both, my computer is acting slow... really slow. It lags when I'm playing Starcraft Brood war on the battle net and before, even with my crappy connection, it almost never lagged and even when it did lag, it lagged for a few secounds and then would be completely fine. While now it lags and continues to lag. Somehow my CPU percent keeps jumping up to 100, even when I'm not doing anything. Any addvice anyone?

First, I'd recommend replacing them with Ad-Aware from Lavasoft and AVG. After that, download CCleaner and go to Registry, then click Scan for Issues. When that finishes, click on Fix All Issues. Don't bother making a backup when it asks, then in the window that comes up, click Fix All.

Here's one for ad-aware: www.lavasoftusa.com/ and trust me on this, if your computer keeps having problems with spyware, ad-aware will be your best friend.

I personally prefer Spybot S&D as my anti-spyware, but usually I do both Spybot AND AdAware. I use AntiVir XP as my anti-virus, Zone Alarm as my firewall, and Registry Mechanic as my registry cleaner.
I also have System Mechanic (I must thank my dad for getting it a LONG time ago).
