A voice came from behind him, a voice he couldn’t identify the source of. Feeling at the gritty walls he whirled as fast as he could manage, stumbling a little in the process but managing to catch another wall before he fell to the damp and filthy earth below. Voice. Someone had spoken. Where was it? Fuck! Fucking lightning striking him blind. He hated storms. Storms had a nasty tendency of making him sick, probably because he never seemed to be able to pay attention to the rain anymore, but whatever. Why’d it have to rain in the first place? It was…fucking stupid. The sun was better, he didn’t have to worry about getting wet or sick or being struck blind in sunlight, not unless he looked directly into the sun. He’d only done that a couple of times.
But dammit, where was that voice?! He wondered briefly whether he’d somehow taken a hit and was now hearing Them, but that was impossible, he would have remembered getting his fix, and besides—They didn’t sound like that voice had. They drowned him in transcendent images and sensations of fantasy and times long past, ghosts and myths and everything else that whisked him away from the shitty world in which he now lived; this voice had sounded too mundane and normal to be Them.
And he still couldn’t find the source.
“Fuck!” The vexation was hissed in pure frustration, not towards any one person but towards the mocking storm which had done him wrong. Then his harsh voice and attention focused on Roslin, though his near-sightless eyes could not seem to follow. “What the fuck does it look like?! No, I’m not okay, dammit! I can’t see! I can’t…” He paused as his vision allowed him sights of blurred and blotchy spots of color. “I can’t…What the fuck? Do you have green hair?! Shit!” A panicked thought raced sluggishly through his head, that perhaps the lightning had somehow ruined his vision. He blinked—and then jumped backwards with a shriek, “What the fuck?! There are two of you?!” Apparently he had not noticed the young girl who had appeared in front of Roslin. “God-fucking-dammit! My sight—my eyes! I can’t…I can’t…Why’d the fucking lightning attack me and not you?! Why can you see?!” Towards the end of his words his tone had grown hostile, almost as though he were looking on the two in front of him as accomplices of the storm come to mock him even more.

Somewhere outside, the wind began to howl, the rain began to fall in ever-increasing urgency, and thunder, unaccompanied by any visible lightning now, began to bellow in anger. Those outside the building and perhaps even those inside the building could hear, faintly—perhaps it was a trick of the wind, perhaps it wasn’t—a willowy voice, tiny compared to the sounds of nature, whimpering and wailing one word, a word which, despite the weakness of the voice, held an urgency and need far greater than the storm: “Help.”

Outside in the wailing elements, the cat-eyed alien stilled where she lay, listening.
"Did you hear that?" Lucubro asked without saying a word, his silent approach enough to suggest the question.
She sat up again, looked at him. "[It's gone.]"
"[We both heard it. I doubt it would kill us to check it out.]"
Rush eyed him skeptically, then agreed in English. "I guess I'm already soaked, anyway."
Lucubro fell into the shadow of the lean-to as the woman reluctantly left her tarp, then stood and went out into the deluge to search for the cry's source.
