This thread is for the purpose of answering all questions you may have about the Class System on my Fire Emblem RP. First, let's explore a rather simple question. What the heck are Classes? Well, a character's Class is the specific type of fighter a character is. They differ in talents and useable weapons, and some even have extra special abilities. Pirates, for example, have the ability to combat while in water. There is one thing that ties all classes together, they can't be changed, except through promotion.
Promotion is a simple aspect, really. When a certain character becomes quite skilled at their current job, they can use a special item to promote themselves into a more advanced (and more powerful) version of that unit. Promotion often gives a character better abilities and the chance to learn how to use another weapon. Of course, the character won't be as skilled with it from the get-go, but later on it becomes a useful aspect. In the grand list of classes I put on here, I'll add what promotes what.
Now I think I should elaborate weaponry. In the Fire Emblem continuum, there are two sets of ways to clean a guy's clock, they are magic and weapons. Weapons are divided into swords, lances, axes and bows (or in the RP I have, muskets). Magic is circled around Light magic, Dark or "Ancient" magic, staves and Anima magic. Anima is a mixed bag, it is consisted of the elements of wind, electricity, fire and ice.
For weapons, there is a common rule. Swordsmen have an edge over axe users, axe wielders trump people that use spears, and spears are more effective against swords. Of course, this is not absolute. A well made sword can be better than a simple lance, and an experienced axeman will make mincemeat out of a rookie sowrdfighter. There are also weapons that reverse this "triangle", the Swordreaver axe, the Swordslayer axe, the Lancereaver sword and the Axereaver spear all reverse the weapon triangle. Bows (or guns) are a neutral party, and have no particular weapon that they trump or are trumped by.
This cycle also works for magic. Dark magic is strong against Anima, Anima is strong against Light, and Light is strong against Dark. This triangle is not absolute either, but there are no spells that reverse the triangle. Staves have no offensive properties, they are meant for healing and other support uses, so they have no standing on the triangle.
I shall now add a list of Classes:
Archer (Gunner)
These gentlemen are your basic, garden variety ranged unit. They most likely have experience with a bow or gun from hunting or lessons, not from actual combat. They use only bows or guns. An Archer (Gunner) can promote to a Sniper or a Ranger (Also known as a Nomadic Trooper or Forest Knight) with the Orion's Bolt.
Bard
Bards are male musical prefomrers. Their songs rejuvinate others so that they fight harder and longer. THey wield no weapons or magic and can't be promoted.
Brigand
Common criminals and ruffians, Bandits are axemen that make their home in the mountains. They use axes and can traverse rough terrain like it's their own backyard. Bandits promote to Berserkers and I can assume Warriors. I am assuming they use the Ocean Seal, like the other "Bandit" class, the Pirate.
Cavalier
These are mounted soldiers and knights that specialize in horseback fighting. They use both swords and lances. Cavaliers can promote to a Paladin or Great Knight with the Knight Crest.
Cleric
A female only class, Clerics are female staff wielders. They have no schooling in other magics and are as such vulnerable. Clerics can promote to Bishops and Valkyries with the Guiding Ring.
Dancer
Another female only calling, Dancers are preformers. Oftentimes they house a mystical power behind their dances. However, mystic or not, a Dancer's dance rejuvinates others so that they fight longer and harder. They wield no weapons or magic.
Fighter
Big brutes, Fighters are muscular brawlers that can take out a lot of enemies before they call it a day. They use axes and can become Heroes or Warriors with the Hero Crest.
Knight
A walking metal wall, Knights are slow, slow, slow. But it's no wonder why, they're covered from head to toe in heave armour, they even have two breastplates, with one detachable and useable as a shield. They use only lances. Knights promote to Generals and Great Knights with the Knight Crest.
Mage
These guys are a treat. These students of magic are practicioners of Anima spells. They're still students of course, and their overall weapon defense is low. Mages can become Sages and Mage Knights with the Guiding Ring.
Mercenary
Your common sellsword, of course, not all mercenaries are Mercenaries, and not all Mercinaries are mercinaries (that's the easiest way to put it, so put the gun down). Mercenaries are well balenced fighters and use swords. They promote to Rangers or Heroes with the Hero Crest.
Monk
A male only class, Monks are acolytes that use the power of Light magic. Like Mages, they're green, and they have low defense. Monks can become Sages or Bishops with the Guiding Ring.
Myrimdon
These guys are speedy swordfighters. Myrimdons are talented with far and middle eastern style swords. Their biggest claim to fame is their ability to strike a vicous "critical hit" more often than most others. Myrimdons promote to Swordmasters or Assassnins with the Hero Crest.
Nomad
Horse mounted archers/gunmen. Nomads are plainsmen that travel everywhere with their kin. They are honourable people. Nomads use bows or guns and promote to Nomadic Troopers with the Orion's Bolt.
Pegasus Knight
A female only class. Pegasus Knights (Peg Knights for short) are female lance users that are mounted on flying horses. They have a very high magical resistance, but are weak against ranged weapons. Peg Knights can become Falcoknights and Wyvern Knights with the Elysian Whip.
Pirate
A male only class, from what I have seen. Pirates are those lovable salty seafarers that sack, pilage and plunder. These outlaws are axe users, and often will use two axes at a time. Pirates can fight in water. These guys can become Berserkers and Warriors with the Ocean Seal.
Priest
A male version of a Cleric. Why they have these two seperate, I don't know. Priests use staves and promote to Sages and Bishops with the Guiding Ring.
Shaman
Practitioners of the Dark (Ancient) arts. Shamen are normal the intellectual types, as while Light magic is based on faith, Dark is based on knowledge. Shamen are sometimes slow. They use Dark magic and seem to have slight telekenetic power. Shamen become Druids or Summoners with the Guiding Ring.
Thief
Thieves are talented knaves that can pick locks and pick the enemies pockets, even in combat. They are wily little buggers that use knives and swords. They don't have a good sword arm, but they compensate with agility and guile. Thieves become Rogues or Assassins with the Fell Contract.
Wyvern Rider
Wyvern Riders are soldiers that fight while mounted on, well, a wyvern. These fellas have much better weapon defense than their Peg Knight sisters, and the Wyvern Riderr job is a unisex class. Wyvern Riders use spears and can promote to Wyvern Knights or Wyvern Lords with the Elysian Whip.
These are the basic soldiers. I'll have to wait a while before I add the advanced classes. Of course, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
