Something I came up with last night. It looked pretty awesome to my subconscious, REM-drugged mind's eye. Let's hope it carries over that well to word and role-play.
Time Period: Future
Power Level: Mecha (Players are Low-powered, Mecha are Low-tier High)
Entry Point: As a pilot or a technician. Technicians are paired with individual pilots to maintain systems and work with them in battle. Pilots are typically more physically capable with better reaction times, while technicians are better at thinking on their feet. Please do not make a Sacred Beast pilot. These will be selected as the story progresses, and you may not want to, anyway, when you find out the price of such power.
Mech Styles: This is pretty open. The Sacred Beasts are set in design, but there are many kinds of units to choose from. Tank units, bipedal units, quadrupedal units, hover units ... Just remember, they're weaker than the Sacred Beasts by quite a bit. Weapons for the war machines are limited to missiles, machine guns, laser swords, laser rifles and ballistic or laser cannons.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The time of Man seems to be drawing to a close. A tremendous force has gathered to strike down he who has raised himself up above the beasts of the Earth. Huge war machines, hybrids of space metal and alien flesh, are the chosen tools of their tidal wave of destruction. Their ultimate goals and reasons are unclear, but one thing is without doubt. Calling themselves Darkness and Shadow, they intend to cast themselves over our civilizations in entirety and bring them to a total, irrefutable close.
But in our Darkest hour, there is yet Light. Eight beings only describable as Goddesses have descended to fight on our behalf. With them, they have brought the gift of the Sacred Beasts, eight powerful war machines to be piloted only by those the goddesses deem worthy of it. From the Sacred Beasts, Man in his ingenuity has reverse-engineered the technology of the Sacred Beasts to create an army of lesser but formidable war machines, varying in design and style as much as Man, himself.
Despite this, however, there remain only eight Sacred Beasts, and it takes a very special pilot to control them. If a goddess finds a pilot worthy, they bless him with a small fraction of their power to allow him to link to the machine, but with this blessing, the pilot loses what makes him a man, as to control a Sacred Beast, you, too, must be divine.
Identity. War. Destiny. One is forged in two to form the third. Who we are and what we stand for achieve definition in conflict. Now that the greatest of them is upon us, will we stand in relief against the rubble or will the flames of war devour us and eliminate us from the face of the galaxy altogether?

The Eight Goddesses
The Four Goddesses of the Body
1: The Goddess of the Heart, who represents the primal element of Fire. She is an intense young woman with dark hair tinted red. Everything she does, everything she feels, is done with the force of everything she has. Her tendency to be flirtatious and joking one minute and be yelling and screaming the next tends to make her difficult for others who aren't familiar with her ebbs and tides to deal with her.
2: The Goddess of the Mind, who represents the primal element of Water. She is an intelligent young woman with round-rim glasses and blue hair. She seemingly has a very weak personality and usually goes with what the others insist, but when she does set her foot down on something, she doesn't move it. If her glasses break or she misplaces them, she can't see anything clearly and trying to focus wears her out and deals her fits of narcolepsy.
3: The Goddess of the Core, who represents the primal element of Earth. Despite the physical strength of her element, she's actually somewhat timid. Her frame is a bit softer than the others, with a bit more padding, but not so much that it makes her look heavyset, just a little more filled out. Her soft spoken demeanor often makes people underestimate the force with which she can stand for her convictions.
4: The Goddess of the Limbs, who represents the primal element of Wind. This young woman gets along well with Joy, the Sixth Goddess, and is fairly similarly minded. She's quick to act and doesn't like wasting time. She's generally good-natured, but tends to rush ahead of the others.
The Four Goddesses of the Soul
5: The Goddess of Compassion, who represents the emotions of Love and Care. She likes to wear red and has a shapely form. Despite how it may sound, she actually frowns on physical love, and thinks it should compliment emotional love, not replace it. She enjoys playing Cupid, but can grow furious when love is tampered with or abused, or someone is neglected in the self-interest of others.
6: The Goddess of Joy, who represents the emotions of Happiness and Innocence. She's bubbly and energetic and gets along well with the Fourth Goddess. She's often seen with her blonde hair in pigtails and tends to be a great source of encouragement for others.
7: The Goddess of Wisdom, who represents the emotion of Curiosity and the Pursuit of Knowledge. Her green hair causes her to stick out in a crowd, but she rarely notices because she's either got her nose in a book or lecturing somebody who usually could care less, but is too fearful of her wrath to try to ditch.
8: The Goddess of Justice, who represents the traits of honesty and fairness. She is statuesque of frame with a lithe, toned build meant for battle. She always seeks to do that which is the fairest to the most people. Despite her domain, she is surprisingly compassionate and doesn't like to bring harm down on others, but when harm is brought to others unfairly by another's hand, the fury of Justice knows no bounds.

The Eight Sacred Beasts
1: The Firecat, a feline Sacred Beast with red armor. It boasts a supernatural-intensity flamethrower in its mouth and self-replenishing shoulder-mounted napalm rockets. It is bound to the Fire Goddess.
2: The Turtle-Tank, a tortoise Sacred Beast with turquoise plating. It lives up to its name with superior defense and a back-mounted holy mortar launcher. It is bound to the Water Goddess.
3: The Stone Gorilla, which while dormant, looks deceptively made of rock. It packs tremendous physical power in melee combat and arm-mounted gatling railguns in its arms make it equally as dangerous at a range. It is bound to the Earth Goddess.
4: The Sonic Sparrow, a small bird Sacred Beast with green plating. While "small," that's only in comparison to the other Sacred Beasts, and it boasts phenomenal speed and maneuverability. For combat, it comes packing a sonic blaster capable of shattering crystal and a plethora of micro-missiles. It is bound to the Wind Goddess.
5: The Red Bear, a self-explanatory Sacred Beast with crimson plating. Its melee power is matched only by the Stone Gorilla. Its primary weapon is the crimson energy cannon located in its mouth, and gatling missile launchers located in its chest, fireable only when it stands on its hind legs. There are also two smaller launchers on its shoulders for when it is on all fours. It is bound to the Compassion Goddess.
6: The Scuba Toad, an amphibious Sacred Beast with yellow plating. Its whiplike tongue gives it respectable range in melee combat while allowing it to stay largely out of harm's way. It shines brightest underwater where its maneuverability is unmatched and its high-concussion torpedoes can be deployed. It is bound to the Joy Goddess.
7: The Sentry Owl, a nocturnal bird Sacred Beast with green plating in the form of steel feathers. It is capable of a full three hundred sixty degrees of observation and can fire its feathers as razor-sharp projectiles. It's not the fastest flier, but it can see in any conditions, no matter how dark, murky or clouded. It has the highest defense of the Sacred Bird Beasts. It is bound to the Wisdom Goddess.
8: The Solar Eagle, a noble bird Sacred Beast with white plating. It can keep pace with the Sonic Sparrow at all but its top speeds and take a beating surpassed only by the Sentry Owl. Its armament consists of lasers of super-condensed ultraviolet light, a plethora of micro-missiles and eight regenerating wing-tip super missiles. It is bound to the Justice Goddess.

The Basic War Machines
1: The Abrams-Gigas is the prime example of human hovertank technology and is largely drawn from the Turtle Tank for technology. Boasting a high-caliber cannon on top, it's known for its per-shot power potential, terrain efficiency and endurance over its capacity for weapon flexibility or firing speed. While the cannon is its primary weapon, it also boasts ground-to-air missiles and large-bore machine guns for smaller foes.
2: The F-123 Fighter forms the core of Man's Air Force. Drawing inspiration from the Sacred Birds and hauling twin mega-gatling machine guns, a missile load made possible by its girth and largely hollow interior and a forward-mounted energy discharge cannon, it's an impenetrable airborne fortress in comparison to its predecessors in the F-Fighter line. And with its impressive away of thruster jets and a vertical-lift system, it gets where it's going fast.
3: The Crab-class submarine has come to replace the nuclear subs of yore as the predominant beast of the depths. With high-discharge torpedoes and the capacity to drop high-yield water mines behind it, there isn't a good side of this vessel that you particularly want to be on.
4: The Biped-class war machines form the backbone of Man's ground forces. Perhaps the most flexible and varied of the Terran war machines, they are capable of mounting different weapons on chassis "hard points" to adapt to different situations. Their leg designs allow them to traverse nearly any solid terrain with stability and control.
