"Captain" he froze to process the name, "Diedrich, issu'd ord'rs to the comp'ny. Scout for and guide the non-natives to the safe zone, help any citzi'ns of the kingdom as long as it do'sn't interf're with the mission and neutral'ze any hostiles."
He pointed in the direction of the watcher, "We were also brief'd that those afflict'd with the sco'rge are suppos'd to be confin'd in their zones or terminat'd if they're a threat, or put outta their mis'ry when they show the late signs."
Mechio held out his hand, motioning for the return of his confiscated grenade from Rensik.
The fountain watcher balked at Mechio's casual implications, "You make it sound like you were put here on purpose, Aiers has no military nor does it have any reason to exist, the kingdom has always been neutral-"
"You that stup'd?! It's on a need to know basis schol'r, civili'ns weren't supposed to know."
Lorelei was certainly enjoying herself, in fact she'd slid over to Mechio and was playfully, with interaction separate from his perceptions, trailing her fingers on his shoulders, "What a delicious conspiracy isn't it, the bladeless kingdom hid its weapons well!"

"If you're really a soldier," Rensik told Mechio, ignoring Lorelei and plainly doubtful of the story, "then you've had combat training. How much?"

The next thing Mechio did was odd to say the least he looked like he was bowing and he actually flickered to those whose perceptions weren't accustomed to quick movement. Like a cheap parlor trick, his bloody machete was now missing from where it had been left laying by the watcher and Miroir, and was now firmly in his hand.
He wasn't brandishing it at anyone, but the fact he had performed this act when he'd previously lacked it drew concern from the watcher and Kamasile. It also wouldn't be too far-fetched that though whatever alleged military Mechio reported to shared common name-ranks with, the training probably wasn't the same.
"Bas'c and second-co'rse infiltration," his stare was even harder on Rensik, since he'd shown the most combat and vocal resistance to what Mechio was doing, he would be unlikely to be caught off guard now, or at least expectant of anything.

"Then you're lousy," Rensik told him flatly, his expression completely deadpan and responseless to the sudden display of rapid movement. "Put it away, kid, before you hurt yourself." Rensik apparently thought so little of Mechio that he actually turned away, turning back toward the others. "So, so we can get this little caravan on the road, I'll ask again. Who's willing to help me with the Matres?"

His grip on the blade certainly tightened at the remark but he didn't strike out at Rensik. As the other turned to address the others, Mechio saw fit to readdress the situation, his handle on the weapon shifting so that the blade ran the same length as his arm.
He loosened his previous stance, repeating his quick movement so that poor Kamasile didn't register it properly until he was already behind her, one arm to keep her in place, the other with the blade lined up with her neck. Indeed it looked odd given that the blade wasn't intended for that but his smaller blades were out of his possession.
"There's no need to help this thin', we jus' needa make sure she let's us go back to the town. You will won' you?"
Matres or no, maybe it was fear that stilled her tongue or that her own 'child' was doing such a thing to her, she said nothing.

But it was an odd sight, something like a three-person hug. Immediately behind Mechio was Rensik, and between Kamasile's neck and the self-proclaimed soldier's blade were the ninja's hands, clasped together and at an angle so that the blade was turned away. As sudden as Mechio's movement had been, for him to make such a threat first before noticing the position might have worried him.
"What did I tell you, kid?" Rensik spoke low in the country boy's ear. "I said put the toy away."

"Sir, jus' allow me to do my job, it'll be bett'r for ev'ryone that way."
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and in a quick motion, withdrew the arm he was using to keep her in place, kicked the back of what should have been the Kamasile's legs so that she was forced to the floor, slammed his head back into what he assumed would have been where Rensik's face was and retreated a short distance away. His weapon was swapped back to its primary grip for frontal attack.

The only reason Rensik hadn't stopped him was that he was catching Kamasile before she fell. He helped her get her footing, then stepped on past her toward Mechio. "I have a job, too, Mechio. I help anyone and everyone I can. I have asked you to provide evidence that this Kamasile is a threat or in some way undeserving of aid, that the children who died today and now have the promise of life are somehow undeserving of that, and you have failed to do so, producing only spouts of paranoia and nonsensical blabber."
The human's hands were loose at his sides, his sword still sheathed, and his stance was in no way combatant, but the expression on his face seemed to dare the crystalline innkeeper's boy to try his luck. "I don't think you want to hurt me, Mechio, and I certainly don't want to hurt you, so you have my word: I'll do this as painlessly as possible. However, I should warn you that, while I may be trained in incapacitation, the brunt of my experience has been in termination."

He glared hard at what the warrior was proposing, a hint of a pupil flickered in his glassy eyes.
"Matres have no childr'n of their own, they ain't suppos'd to. A human or one of the Aiersts ain't suppos'd to give power to a Matres or one of the Watchers to do their works. They give an' take what they can, a Matres gives guidance and protection to children, and in return, takes their love and time. The Moire are the only ones that take life and give cons'quence to the world. A Disir takes anythin' it can and gives empty promises."
He pointed the blade at Kamasile and she flinched at the threat, "A Moire cannot give rise to life, a Matres never takes life and only Disir fear death."
Lorelei saw fit to go into hysterics, "He certainly has his case built up Rensy!"

"Disir don't actually fear death that much ..." Rensik answered flatly, ignoring the nickname from the one in the room. "However, we've already established the possible cause of what could have caused her degradation, and we already know that her children aren't actually hers in the common sense. She can, however, return them to life if we help her. With more than one, the cost can be split and covered without cost of life. Why do you object to that?"

Lorelei chirped at Rensik's idea of bringing her children back, "You forgot something Rensy, I need to attach their souls back to the bodies. Even if you gladly get the life sucked out of you and some other fool, what makes you think I'll do he most important step?"
Mechio gave a short, cold, laugh, "What degr'dation? S'that what the Disir you're talkin' to said? If she jus' needs life, why not draw it from the animals or plants? Why insist on meddlin' with the Moire's affairs? If everyone liv'd, Aiers would die, that's why the sco'rge was releas'd."

Rensik calmly glanced back to the Matres. "Your turn," he answered. "He asks a valid question, Kamasile. Do you have an answer?"

"I...I don't know," she woefully admitted, "I just want my children back, please..."
"If the Disir can't explain," he started making his way to her, "Then let us go, or I'll send ya to the canvas where your 'childr'n' wait."

But Rensik's arm raised to place itself between the two of them again. "You once told me," the ninja told the boy, "that the wasting scourge gradually causes a loss of memory and eventually higher functions. If the assumption is correct that she broke a taboo of the Matres and thus lost her protection against the disease, inevitably falling to it, is it then out of the question that her memory has become compromised as a result?"

"...If she's bein' affect'd by the same things the Aiersts and humans are, she ain't a Matres anymore, and she'll just have to suffer alon' with the rest of us."
He quietly cleaned the blood of his weapon by dragging it across the cloth on the outside of the sheath, "The hon'st shepherd doesn' spit in the face of the hon'st butcher."
