Mokuva, already swimming to the diver in the suit, began to slow to a stop when she saw the mermaid she has never seen before exit from the ship. "Why in the world did she come from that ship? Are they releasing her? Has she been !!!!!!!!!!" Mokuvas thought process was severely interrupted at the young mermaids massive broadcast, being so close it all but shouted inside her head.
"What in the world is wrong with you! Shouting a message like that without any warning at all." She chastised the new mermaid as she began swimming to them again, faster now, she was unusually curious as to why this mermaid was with humans.

"Look, Ian! I found one!" Ian watched as Flower sped towards the trident-armed mermaid, a warrior of Sea Fire if there ever was one. He feared Flower might actually try to hug her and urged her to stop as he slowly trudged after her. Thankfully she listened stopped at a respectful distance, but wasted no time trying to socialize as her human counterpart struggled to catch up. "I think she's the one who found us," Ian nervously added.
"Sorry for being so loud," Flower told her. "But I had to be. I have great news for you all! You'll remember that today was a special day, and you're lucky to be the first to meet us." She giggled, circling her new friend as she pelted her with questions an compliments. "I like your colors. Do you like mine? What's your name? How did you get so big? You look so strong. Doesn't she look strong, Ian?" She turned to see he had finally made his way over to join the two maids.
"That she does. She's from Sea fire after all." Flower cocked her head to one side. "The warrior clan?" "Something like that, yes."
Flower was pleased. With her curiosity momentarily satisfied, Ian was able to direct his thoughts to his first contact. "I'm very glad to meet you, but please, do not be alarmed. I am indeed human but I come as a friend to all mermaids. My name is Ian. And this is Flower, my counterpart" She chirped her own excited greeting and twirled once to display her uniquely long and colorful tail. "I told you this was great news! But he hasn't even gotten to the best part."

"Mokuva simply watched their little exchange, completely puzzled by the way it seemed the human actually understood The young mermaid. Though her value of respected would make her question wait until she has answers those she had been asked."
"Hello, I am Mokuva Sune, I am indeed of the Sea Fire. I find your unique colors interesting, and i'm so big because i've been around for a long time." She eyed the human with extreme curiosity, "How does he know what you ask Flower? He answers your questions as if he himself can hear them. Also, this is the first time i've seen a human claim to be a mermaids friend, I wish to know this "good news", what might it be?"

Mairsile sniffed morosely in response. "I once had an offer to study under Moon Scale's best," she confided in the woman trying to console her, "but Mother wouldn't let me go ... What if she won't let me study under you, either?"

"She won't," Oylandra said flatly. "Which is why you will not tell her."
As the matriarch's hand rested on the pale shoulder of her student-to-be, her grip tightened ever so slightly. "Understand, child, your venerable mother is caught up in the old ways of thinking. There was a time when our race truly flourished in all of the word's seas and oceans, and all we needed to do to attain such power was to simply breed. To this day, a mermaid is still judged by the offspring she is able to produce, but this alone will not be enough to save us from extinction."
The spark of ancient wisdom was in Oylandra's golden eyes as she lead Mairsile on a leisurely swim along the edge of the undersea cliff. She then stopped and pointed her staff at a shadowy figure resting at the bottom, obscured by the darkness of the depths. "Behold."
The word acted as command for a magical light to illuminate what turned out to be a wrecked fishing vessel. One that had been equipped to hunt mermaids. It's dark past ways laid open to the eyes as a great door in the ship's deck groaned open on rusty hinges, revealing the intermingled skeletons of hundreds of Mairsile's ancestors. Oylandra gazed down at the mass grave, indifferent to the horror of her young protege.
"They were weak," she told her. "They could not adapt, and they perished. It is a sad thing, but we must honor their sacrifice for they have shown s what we must do if we are to survive. Each maid must strive to be something more than their mothers, gaining new strength to carry our people into the future."
The light faded, and the door to the rusty crypt slammed shut. Olyandra turned to face Mairsile, staring coldly. "Mermaids like your mother only seek to breed and not to evolve. They would try to reclaim the seas when they are still as weak as the slain ancestors they have foolishly forgotten. I have shown you this so your will understand that you are the example they must follow. Mairsile, you are the very image of a bright of bountiful future for your clan and you will bring them great honor through your powers, but they do not yet see the same potential in you as I. What power does your womb have compared to the strength of your mind, body, and soul? Child, what I will teach you will allow you to command them in ways you've never imagined. But are you willing to heed my word over your mother's?"

The girl thought quickly on the spot. "I shall need an excuse to be away from home. Staying over at a friend's home should be sufficient ..." It seemed she had made her decision. She would study under Oylandra, keeping it from her mother, though not so she could command them, but so she could bring that strength back to them. She wanted to help her people grow so they wouldn't be like those poor souls locked in that wooden and metal crypt.

A satisfied smile came over Olyandra's face as her eyes twinkled with mysterious intent. "You've shown yourself to be wise beyond your years, little-one." The sorceress seemed to admire her new student, still smiling warmly as she ran her fingers through Mairsile's long hair--what might have been considered a somewhat inappropriate display of affection.
"Now, I've put my trust in you, young Mairsile," Oylandra was sure to indirectly remind the girl of her lower station. She loomed over the nubile Tide Water maid with an air of icy authority as her warm demeanor faded away. "You must tell no one of what you will learn from me, or who I am. You did not meet me today. Understand?"
There was something deadly serious in Oylandra's gaze that overshadowed Mairsile with an unspoken threat. But just as quickly as it had gone, the matriarch's friendly smile returned and she touched the blush of Mairsile's cheek with a soft caress. "Yes, I think we understand each other quite well. Now, I have no more words for you today. I will find you again when it is time for your first lesson."

The girl flushed as Oylandra ran her fingers through her hair, fidgeting with her fingers, but when the woman told her the terms, she didn't hesitate. Do not tell anyone what she's learning or who it's from, she didn't have this conversation. She immediately saluted with her hand to her forehead. "Yes, ma'am!" she answered promptly. "I don't even know you!"
Apparently pleased with her response, Oylandra smiled again and brushed her cheek, drawing out another blush, then dismissed her. Mairsile nodded and bowed, her blue locks trailing behind her in the water. "Thank you very much for this, Your Highness," she said sincerely. "I'll eagerly await my first lesson."

As she half swam, half drifted back into the murky depths Oylandra gave Mairsile a knowing glance over her shoulder. "As do I, my girl. As do I..." ***** One vague compliment was all it took for Flower forgot about Ian. "I like your colors too!" She darted around Mokuva in circles to get a look at her from all angels, while simultaneously showing off the curves and colors of her own body to secretly impress the elder maid. "And your tail looks so smooth," she said, before stoking it and happily exclaiming "It is smooth! I love it!" She giggled before catching sight of her own tail and frowning at it's hardened plate-like scales. She sighed with a small pout. "Mine makes me look like a lobster..." Flower was fishing for more compliments. Ian bit. "Your tail is your heritage, Flower. You ought to be proud of how beautiful it is." Ian's gloved hand came to rest on her shoulder with a comforting grip, but he pressed her with a concerned tone. "Now, we must remember to answer the questions of our hosts. We talked about this." Though she was still eager to have her ego stroked Flower instantly cheered up as she circled around Ian and tightly wrapped her "heritage" around his waist. She smiled at Mokuva from over his shoulder, arms looped around the neck of his helmet. "Ian speaks with us because I taught him to," Flower boasted. "He truly is my good friend and he has much to say! Tell her the good news, Ian." She giggled as she tightened her tail's grip on him. She didn't know why she got such a strange feeling from doing so, but she enjoyed it just the same. Some how it felt... right. And right felt good. Ian tried to gather his thoughts. In a moment he had them and diplomatic prose followed. "Ma'am," he began, though he could have said "sir" for all the good either honorific would have done a member of a unisex society. "I've come in good spirit with the news that many human nations of high prominence have ceased and renounced the cruel and unjust persecution of mermaids. I have been sent on their behalf to foster a new friendship between our peoples, that we might begin to understand one another and to coexist peacefully, sharing the wealth and beauty of the word's oceans.

Mokuva caught herself half smile, she had never been complimented about the smoothness of her tail before, only about her size and strength. "And whats better.....she has a mind like that of some children, so she is most likely very honest and sincere." Her smile widened as she thought about it more.
She watched as they discussed her tail, and how they seemed so fond of each other. "This human is safe, he could not be so kind to one and not the others, for fear of offending her." She could not be so sure of those still in the boat above though.
Her eyes widened as he said he and the human nations wanted to coexist. "Why do they want to coexist? I am glad they do, but what has changed their mind?"

"I did!" Flower chirped proudly. "It took me a long time but I learned how out how to speak to humans, and I taught them how to speak to us." Flower swished her tail fin happily as she strummed her fingers on Ian's main view port. "And this human is the first one who could hear me. It was fate."
"That may very well be," Ian admitted. "With Flower's help, I was able to show the great men of our world that mermaids are not the mindless fish we once thought them to be. You see, for all these years, our kind hunted yours on the belief you were animals, or at least something less than any of the high races."
"But I've proven how wrong you all were, didn't I? Otherwise you never would have figured it out." Flower smiled, giving Ian a strong squeeze with her tail.
Ian winced, slightly embarrassed as he nodded inside his helmet. "Indeed. Our ignorance cost the lives of many a maid, and many more if not for you."
"That's right," Flower replied, feeling special. "And so here we are! I'm here to help Ian and the humans make amends." She then added, with a shiver of pleasure. "And I love everything about it. I'm so happy!"
Ian chucked nervously. "I don't suppose you're liable to run away on me are you?"
"Oh no!" Flower assured him. "Not yet! And not here. You said my reef was in some other place." "Besides," she mused. "We still have to meet all the other clans, don't we? I can't miss that."
"Well, yes, about that," Ian directed his thoughts to the venerable Sea Fire warrior. "I imagine Flower's message will be causing quite a stir throughout the islands. Reason being, I very much wish to share this news with all the clans. If a meeting with your matriarch could be arranged...?"
"Oh yes!" Flower interrupted. "I'd love to meet her! Is she pretty? How many babies has she had?"
There was little Ian could do to stem the tide of Flowers questions if they really got going. Answering them would only raise more, so he stopped her before she got out of hand. "Flower, please, you'll know soon enough. Right now we must wait."
"But I can't wait!" She whined, fidgeting from anticipation.

"Hmm, I am very impressed you managed to speak with humans flower. I have tried a few times before.....but unsuccessfully, I would be honored if you would teach me it."
She was then reminded that she was not the only to hear flowers outburst. "Hmm, I advise we head to my clan very quickly, though I doubt they will harm you, the dark fathom loath humans with a deep hatred. If they were to arrive first, truce or not, I would fear for your safety." She looked around rather concerned, "My matriarch would most likely wish to meet you first as it is. So, please hurry."

With new energy, Mairsile swam back toward her clan. Soon, blue tails disrupted blue water and giggling and thoughts bombarded her. Something had happened, something big, and everyone was talking about it. Unfortunately, because everyone was talking about it, she couldn't hardly make out anything about it. Instead, she hurried through the crowds to seek out her mother and hopefully find out more about what was causing such a stir.

All of Tide Water was in an uproar. For some inexplicable reason there was much talk and debate of who had the most shapely tail, the bluest eyes, the fullest bust. Posturing and comparing bodies was an everyday affair in Tide Water, but this was an outright explosion of egotism, a battle of sex appeal. And all of Mairsile's friends and relatives were to caught up in it to notice her or explain what in the world was going on. All but her mother.
"Mairsile!" Her call was like the flash before the thunder as she barged through the crowd to reach the youngest of her brood. "Mairsile Tide-Water, where have you been?" It was clear she'd worked herself up into an exasperated fit, but before Mairsile could even begin to answer her mother scoffed and waved the question away. "Oh, never mind. But come!" Mairsile was then seized by one wrist and hauled back through the crowd like a little girl to where her sisters were all engrossed in anxiously chatting amongst themselves in a tight circle.
"Look! She's back!" cried one, poking her head out of the group. "Mairsile!" cried the others as they all turned about and swarmed around her, each eager to be the first to tell her the exciting news. All their thoughts bombarded Mairsile at once, drowning each other out.
"Girls!" their mother shouted. "Hush!" They did as they were told, keeping quiet but still chomping at the bit to see Mairsile's reaction. Her mother smiled and pulled Mairsile to face her. "Darling, you're not going to believe this, but we heard a message from one of the clans saying there are humans who want to meet with us in peace. They're here to become our friends. Isn't it amazing?"
"It's a ship Mairsile!" One of her sisters swooned, hugging her chest. "Just think of it. There's got to be dozens of men on it."
"Or hundreds!" another shouted, causing an uproar of giggles and joyful squirming.
One of Mairsile's sisters added, "Well, actually, we're not sure who sent that message, but what does it matter! Who ever sent it sounded as if she had already claimed a mate!" Their mother nodded. "Indeed," she told Mairsile. "But don't fret! I'm going to see all of you are paired with a man. I won't let you miss the chance."
