Poor Mairsile was so confused by all the hustle and bustle, but after being dragged away by her mother to where her sisters were primping and having it explained to her, after a manner of speaking, she was in awe. A human vessel, actually wanting to interact with them! Imagine all the possible knowledge and experience and ...
The mermaiden's face fell as it finally donned upon her what all the uproar was about. Every maiden of Tide-Water was hoping to get knocked up. "I ... I see," Mairsile told her mother, unable to muster the excitement she had a moment previous. "I suppose, then, you're wanting me to give you all legs?"

The face of Mairsile's mother came alight at the idea. "Ah, yes! All the better to present an alluring display." She came behind Mairsile and nudged her closer to her siblings. "Dear, why don't you share your magic with your sisters. You can do that can't you?" They all chattered and chirped in the affirmative, fixing the mage of the family with eager and pleading looks, desperate for what was sure to give them an advantage over the rest of the clan in competition for a human mate.
"Now, I wonder about breasts though," their mother said thoughtfully. "Don't men like breasts?" The sisters went wild. "Yes! Mairsile, use your magic to make us bigger! The men will love it!" Their mother nodded. "Oh yes, I can recall how much your father seemed to enjoy mine."
For a moment she seemed lost in the memories of her human encounter, but then shook her head with a disapproving frown. "But come now, girls. The goddesses already have already filled your bosoms to bursting. You should not ask for a blessing they have already given to you so generously. I swear, you all take after your grandmother when she was your age." The sisters settled down seeming to feel just a little bit guilty for already being so well endowed.
"But on the other hand," their mother added with a smile. "Mairsile, using your magic to give yourself a little boost couldn't hurt your chances. After all, it can't be helped that some blessings tend to skip a generation." All of Mairsile's sisters burst into laughter.

Mairsile promptly made a sour face at the old ribbing. "Oh, hardy-har-har," she answered good-naturedly. It didn't really bother her. She knew she was still good-sized, so were that something she concerned herself with, she wouldn't mind, even if the average size of her siblings was larger. At least she'd be able to help, and perhaps with her sisters all off gallivanting with humans, she could tag along and actually learn something. So she went about her sisters, touching the fin of each one before it would separate and form into twin legs. She was obviously more practiced than them at using them, so she had a few moments of payback for the earlier laughter as they stumbled over one another, trying to find their, ah, sea legs.

The despite their clumsiness, the sisters were all amazed at their new endowments. They kicked and stretched their new legs, testing their range of motion as they drew envious stares from the other Tide Water maids. "It's like having two tails," said one. "No," remarked another. "It's more like having another pair of arms." Curious, yet another sister asked, "So... Are these like shoulders then?" She turned her back with both hands groping the soft cheeks of her newly formed rump. The others cocked there heads, unsure of what they were seeing, and feeling as they examined their own bodies in turn. "Ooh, it's squishy. Mother, what is it?"
"Something all human women have," she told them. "So I'm sure it too must be used for attracting a mate. And if legs really are like arms..." She chuckled at her daughters. "Well, the better to grip your man when you find him."
The sisters all smiled, together saying "Ahh..." as each nodded in understanding to one another and to Mairsile. "Thank you so much!" they cheered. Her mother also turned to commend her, though she began to grow suspicious of her daughter's disappointed frown "Aren't you glad, Mairsile? You magic has never had a better use before now." She cradled the young mage's face in her loving hands. "You have done this for the family, and for the clan. Just think: you and your sisters will be irresistible to the men." She smiled warmly." Now, promise me you will find the strongest male to fill you. I have such great expectation for your first daughter."
"Or daughters!" one of the sisters added. "Remember, the goddesses shaped us with two breasts for a reason." All giggled. Especially Mairsile's mother, who knew it to be especially true.

"Oh, it's not that," Mairsile answered, resisting the powerful urge to curl her lip up in disgust, but unable to get back the cheer, either, so she passed it off as being distracted. "I was just thinking ..." What was she thinking? She couldn't tell her mother and sisters that she was more interested in knowledge than babies! Unless ... "... about what kind of fertility magic they might have!" she finished. "After all, imagine how much trouble they must have reproducing when they can't do it on their own. They must have powerful magic, indeed, if it keeps their people so numerous."

"Oh Mairsile! Bless your heart, you're right!" The mother's look of delighted surprise faded to form a relaxed and reminiscent grin as her anxious brood chatted and chirped, eager to know more. "I remember your father," she told them fondly, resting two fingers on her lips as she bowed her head to search her long memory. "He was strong. So virile. With his magic he could could do great things. Amazing things. The goddesses smiled on our union, and blessed me with all of you." Having never known their father, the sisters were hushed by reverence. Their mother again turned to Mairsile. "When you meet with the men, claim one of them, but also try to learn their magic." " Fertility magic!" one of her sisters shouted, before being lightly scolded for speaking out of turn. " I am your mother," she reminded them. "And I wish your all great fortune in finding your mate. Mairsile, you have your task as well, but remember: fertility magic is all that we have a use for. Nothing else." ***** "Dark Fathom?" Flower asked, tilting her head quizzically. She turned to Ian for answers. "They're one of the clans, yes?" "Yes, that's right," Ian replied, not knowing their reputation, while also raising a gloved hand to interject. "Well actually, Mokuva, I must insist we remain here. I'd love to meet your matriarch, of course. However I was hoping Flower's call would draw maids from each of the clans. It is my hope that we then might be able to arrange a meeting." Flower gave Ian another squeeze with her tail. "A meeting with all the clans?" "Yes, yes," Ian assured her. Adding to Mokuva, "I'd like to have a meeting with all the matriarchs together." Flower squealed happily, finally releasing Ian to twirl and twist in an impromptu dance of joy. "I finally get to meet them!"

"Yes, ma'am!" Mairsile chirped, happiness returning to her tone, not because of the promise of men or because her mother said she was limited only to fertility magic, but because that meant that she'd actually get to study human magic, and whoever said she might not pick something else up in the process?

"Hmm, I see. I guess the matriarchs would be more likely to meet here in neutral waters then in another clans territory. I'm sure my matriarch is on her way as we speak, I told the sunbathers of your arrival before your message. So she should be the first to arrive, and if not, i'll make sure the clan that arrives first listens before they do anything."
She was sure the Tide water clan, dark fathom, and her clan would show, though she was unsure of the moon scale, they kept to themselves, but their curiosity might have them come here.

"Very good then," Ian said with an enthusiastic grin, relieved at his progress. He was lucky Mokuva hadn't killed him or Flower on sight. All seemed to be going just as well as it could have. With any luck, scouts from the other clans would soon arrive and Ian would be able to state his business before the four matriarchs with Flower at his side. Which he suddenly noticed she wasn't.
Flower had slipped off of her fellow ambassador to stalk a large crab that watched the curious mermaid as it scuttled sideways across the sandy bottom. The wary crustacean was beet red encrusted with barnacles. Moreover it was enormous, as big an a coffee table with claws the size of bolt cutters. Ian had studied Boulder Crabs at his alma mater and knew but up until then he had never seen one in the wild. It was a living testament to the lush diversity of life in the Aaron's, and also dangerous if provoked.
"Flower, you'd best let him by," Ian warned as she circled giant crab causing it to rear up in a threatening posture that made Flower smile. "Is it good to eat?"

"I wouldn't know your taste, but to me it tastes quite good. And I would take his advice flower, if he gets a claw around you, It won't let go."
Mokuva was surprised how carefree flower was. "Has she never seen a crab before?" "How old are you flower? If you don't mind me asking."

Mairsile's mother smiled on her proudly. "You'll do fine. I know you will. Now restore your sisters tails! You must be off." Once again, the brood erupted into anxiousness chatter, worried that they might get the last pick of mates if other maids reached the humans first. "Legs won't do us any good if they keep us from getting there first!" They were almost beginning to panic, each whining and begging to be made into a true mermaid again. Their mother did her best to quiet them, though she also shared their concerns for snatching up the best male. "Hush girls, please. Do hurry, but don't strain yourselves. You must save your strength..." The maids all blushed and giggled through their hands, remembering the tantalizing lessons their mother had taught them when they had each become of age. ***** "Flower?" Flower wasn't paying any attention. This was normal, but what struck Ian was the uncanny gleam in her eye. The giant crab hissed and Flower's toothy grin slowly widened. Ian turned to apologize to Mokuva. "She's never been in the ocean before I'm afraid. Never seen a crab or anything of the sort. She's twenty-two now, and I think it's all a bit overwhelming for her." Then... Thwack! The sound almost had a psychical impact on Ian, who knew that given it's density, sound traveled much faster through water than air. Even though the human ear was less apt at hearing in an underwater environment, it was almost as if a sledgehammer had struck the side of his all metal helmet, causing a horrendous and bang like the crack of a mighty whip. The startling sound had seemed to come from every direction at once, but Ian immediately identified the source when he turned to were Flower and the boulder crab had faced off. The crab seemed stunned and disoriented, with Flower smiling wider then before. Ian watched and she suddenly twirled head over fin and struck the crab with the weight of her armored tail. Thwack! The crab stumbled and Flower hit it again, whipping up a cloud of white sand around it. One of it's claws snapped off as the dazed crustacean tried in vain to defend it's self from the force of Flower's repeating blows. Finally, it collapsed -dead- with a fissure running through the top of it's thick shell. Seeing this, Flower hooked her hands into it and pulled. With a sudden and sicking crack the once mighty crab came apart in two pieces, and Flower wasted no time in stuffing her cheeks with succulent crab meat. Ian was stunned. "Flower? What... How did you do that?" The triumphant mermaid looked up from her meal with an unsure but happy look on her face. "I don't know. I wasn't really thinking," she said merrily, popping another white morsel into her mouth. "You should try some of this! It's wonderful!" It's instinct, Ian thought, amazed by Flower's wild side.

"Twenty-two.......still rather young, but to not hold back curiosity at her age was shocking, she must have never been in real danger from her own actions before."
Mokuva's eyes widened slightly when Flower suddenly struck the crab with her tail. "That's quite impressive, that tail is much stronger than mine." She watched as Flower kept crushing the crab, and as she started eating Mokuva smiled,"All of that just to taste the crab meat, what an amazing personality."
"Nicely done Flower, I don't think Ian can eat any of that underwater though. It's so wonderful to meet someone as cheerful as you Flower, it pleases me greatly."
Mokuva was shocked that she was actually pleased by Flowers completely innocent and childlike mind, she usually hated when mermaids displayed such things. Maybe it was because of the promise of peace, or that she knew Flower would most likely never be in danger because of such actions.

It took only a fraction of the time to undo the magic as it had to cast it, and in a handful of moments, all the Tide-Water brood had their tails back and while they rushed off toward the ship thinking of the promise of men and babies, Mairsile dashed among them with equal vigor at the promise of magic. She even let a little magic out that she had been practicing with, and she shot ahead of them, outdoing any of their speed in the process.

Ian knew Flower loved to be given complements but they seemed to mean much more to her when the words came from of one of her own kind. It validated something in her. Filled a need no human could. Ian saw that in her smile and he knew he had made the right choice to bring her into the wild. He chuckled, then fell silent as Flower suddenly froze.
She looked perplexed, staring off into space as her "ears" - the somewhat horn-like projections on either side of her head - twitched and flexed, tuning into some imperceptible change in the equilibrium of the sea. "They're coming..." She said, barley whispering. Then cheered "They're coming!" Flower spun for joy.
"Who's coming?" Ian asked, hoping Flower would hear him. "Are there mermaids coming?" "Yes!" She replied as she cut a vertical figure eight through the water. "How many?" She paused and grinned. "Lots."
