"Oh," his cheer deflated slightly, "but why not? It's such a crying shame!"
Jack briefly recollected himself, "Since you're self-taught what magic were you doing to the seed earlier anyway? Were you just levitating it? Maaaaaaybe you could help me..."

Mairsile nodded, a simple, singular bob of the head. It felt odd to do so out of water, where your hair hung back like a dead weight instead of following suit. She concluded that it was most uncomfortable outside the water, but bearable if one had good reason. "One of the simplest magicks we learn when we are little involves playing with bubbles," she explained. "We toss them back and forth to see how long we can keep it going without popping it."

The exorcist's eyes widened, "Really? Can you control the size too? How strong can you make them..?"

"The size depends on the magic user and the amount of control they have," she explained, "but if there's any way to make them stronger than a bubble, I do not know it. But as I have implied, that doesn't mean much, as I have no formal education on the matter. My mother did not allow it. May I ask you a question?"

A small groan escaped him when he heard her explanation, but at hearing her request permission for a question he perked back up, "Oh sure, feel free to ask anything! It'd be a pleasure to answer!"

The mermaid blinked as she tipped her head to one side and the thought entered his mind. "Why do you talk with your mouth?"

He gaped with surprise and he scratched the back of his head as he tried to conjure up an explanation. He started to gesture aimlessly as he haphazardly tried to justify it, "Uh well you see.... Uhm.... most humans talk with their mouths because that's how we've always talked. Lots of other things on land talk with sounds too. So it's a land thing....I guess."

"Oh ..." she answered after a moment, then after a second moment, she tilted her head the other way. "But doesn't the ... what do you call it ... air get into your mouth when you try to do that?"

Jack laughed nervously, "Uh yeah, we kind of need that to live...."

"Well, of course," the girl agreed, apparently not understanding, "but doesn't it gag you?"

He looked helpless at that, like he wasn't quite sure how to make the concept sink in. "Well the air itself doesn't do that, in some places where the air is bad enough it will. The air around here is pretty good by land-living standards. Is the air making you uncomfortable?"

She took a deep breath as if to test it. "No ..." she answered after a moment. "It's really, really dry, but it's okay ..."

He laughed jovially at her testing, "Well I guess you could say that, dry is opposite to wet." He blinked at yet another slow realization entering his mind, "Say, why are you up here? Aren't you supposed to be meeting with Dr. Hackett and Flower," he pointed down to the floor to imply the ocean outside, "Who are back in the water..?"

Mairsile smiled apologetically. "I'm afraid he may have already gotten more Tide-Water representatives than he had planned for, and for your sake, I would advise that you not step outside. My clan-sisters are all over the deck outside, as well. It is kind of embarrassing, actually."

Fairin was thrilled and very proud to see her daughters in such a sexual frenzy. It reminded her of the heady days of her boisterous youth, when she had been filled with same vigorous drive that she fondly observed in in her amorous brood as they all crowed around the armored human. Whoever he was, he was wasting his energy trying to escape. Fairin chuckled, remembering how much her own human partner had hesitated at first, but she ultimately persuaded him. Oh, yes.
Though she hadn't aged a day past thirty - no mermaid ever did - Fairin wondered if she could still compete for another male as she once had, again thinking back to the old rivals she had to defeat in order to claim the mating rights to the human mage. At length, however, she sighed in resignation. No, she thought. It is their time. The youngest generation must be the first to conceive.
Indeed, the girls seemed to be acting all the more rambunctious for the fact that a human presence had triggered their first estrus. But that wasn't all. As she swam into the thick of the crowd, Fairin came to realize there was even greater reason for so much excitement. She heard the human speak!
"Please," he said between strained grunts. "Please, let me speak! I have urgent news!" Fairin could hardly believe it, but the mermaids were drunk in their lust for him, giggling constantly, headless of his pleas. The only one who seemed to be hearing the besieged diver was a maid not of Tide Water, or any other Aaron clan for that matter. Even through the ring of curious maids that had encircled the newcomer, Fairin could see her her tail was fuschia, maroon, pink over all. It was also unusually long and clad in large scales that looked hard as clam shells. She was a figure Fairin simply had to investigate.
Flower, as her name turned out to be has a bit preoccupied with trying to reach the man she called Ian, but still responded politely to Fairin's questions, and those of the other eager clan-sisters. They all gradually learned of Flower's origins in the human realm and of her jubilant personality. However, Fairin, the oldest and most disciplined of all the maids present was much more intrigued to hear what she had to say about the "Ian" male, and was amazed at her luck to learn he was the leader among the human visitors. What joy!
She turned to observe him with a smile. Here was the mate for Mairsile. She would see to that. But then she asked herself... Where is Mairsile? Not in the virtual mating ball that had formed around Ian - where Fairin thought she ought to have been. She searched, pinging her name insistently and with increasing exasperation.
"Mairsile! Mairsile! Mairsile, you stubborn girl, where are you?"
