Hidden from the sights of those who might wish to look skyward from the surface of the planet, the invisible Space Command was observing the events that unfolded planetside in silence.
Deep within Space Command, past thousands of active crew members, scientists, mages and soldiers, each going on with their tasks and assignments, was a portal. The portal stood on a platform in the center of a massive chamber, its top nearly touching the high ceiling. Around it, dozens of highly trained soldiers and mages stood ready. The portal came to life.
Nearby, the man known to the world only as the Strategist was at one of the database rooms, going through the applications of those who volunteered to join. He was going through each one thoroughly, and was interrupted when the largest panel shimmered and a familiar, dark-skinned woman in a high-ranking military uniform appeared.
"What is it, Commander?" the Strategist leaned back in his seat.
"Sir, we are in position. The portal is active and someone's coming in."
The Strategist nodded, "I will be right there."
He entered a few commands to disable the panels then walked out. Whenever he passed a crew member, they paused to look at him as he walked by. The soldiers saluted him and he nodded as he walked past.
He arrived in the portal room and looked at the portal, which was glowing with intense bright energy that flowed like a thick sheet of water. The Commander, Maya, saluted the Strategist, and he absentmindedly saluted her back. "How long as this been active?" he asked.
"Ten minutes, at most, sir."
"Is it ready?" he asked.
Commander Maya turned to look at a scientist working on a small panel twenty feet away. "It's now at the optimal power level. Whoever is going to come in is going to have to be here soon." said the scientist, continuing his work.
"Good," the Strategist allowed himself a brief yet faint smile. "Let them come."
The portal connected with a thousand other worlds at specific locations. Those who have been contacted by Space Command and provided with an access code will be able to arrive safely. Those who dare an attempt to show up uninvited will be stored in the portal and eventually broken down into energy to keep it active.
They waited.
